Just a reminder that tomorrow is a big day for our students and volunteers! Volunteers that signed up will need to check in at our front office, we will have a table ready to check you in. Please wear comfy clothes that you don't mind getting dirty in! We are putting you to work on special projects. Once you are checked in, you will be sent to where you will be working.

Our students are working on special projects in the classroom, too. It is going to be a wonderful day!

As the principal of Woodland Primary School, I am inviting parents to join me this year as a part of our Primary Parent Advisory Committee. The goal of this committee is to provide parents and caregivers with a structured forum to share their opinions and perspectives, discuss important school topics, and develop recommendations in a focused, small-group setting.

This committee will provide parents with the opportunity to provide input and feedback on school initiatives and programs. It will also be a great way to meet other parents and build relationships within our school community.

This committee will meet monthly and will include staff representation from the Primary School. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please take a minute to fill out the form located HERE. This will help determine what time of day is best for the group to meet if we should meet in person or virtually, and more specific details.

This is your chance to use your voice to provide constructive feedback and help us improve our systems and school community relations.

Our first Wildcat Wednesday is on September 27th! Each month we have a community ROAR assembly with all of our kindergarten students. We call it, Wildcat Wednesday. The assembly features Wiley and it's a chance for us to review the ROAR expectations, celebrate the ROAR winners of the month, and build relationships as a kindergarten community.

Each month we have a special skit put on by our Woodland staff members that focuses on a ROAR expectation. This Wednesday we are reviewing riding the bus and following the expectations. We encourage everyone to wear our school colors (green and white) or their Woodland Spirit Wear! It's a great time to show our Woodland pride, review our behavior expectations, and show school spirit. Go Woodland Wildcats!

• Research shows that missing 10% of the school, or about 18 days in most districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just 2 days a month and it is considered chronic absence.

• When children miss school, we miss them! Teachers will call home to check on your child and discuss what ways we can support getting the child to school.

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) takes place from September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community.

Beginning in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was originally observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week”, but it was later extended to a month in 1988. Since then, HHM has been celebrated nationwide through festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, and much more.

Teachers will be sharing great stories with our students (some examples are below!) and during our morning announcements we will be highlighting Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

Last week we taught our students how to do a bus evacuation in the event of an emergency. Our students did an amazing job of following the directions and listening to the bus drivers and Primary staff.

Coming up next week we have our first fire drills of the year. Students will be learning about the fire drills in advance so that they are prepared for the loud fire alarm and so that they understand this is just a practice drill. We have a special video that shows Wiley the Wildcat participating in a fire drill as well as other teaching tools so that our students can see how a fire drill works and then practice the drill.

Because we have an AM and PM preschool session, our kindergarten students will get to practice the drill two times! We will have the drills on Thursday, September 28th, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In addition, we invite the Gurnee Fire Department to observe and participate in our drill to provide us with feedback following the drill. They attend if they are available and each year they attend at least one of our required drills. Safety is a priority and we want all of our students to feel comfortable knowing what to do in case of an emergency.

Your child's school picture day at Primary will be on either September 26th or September 27th. Your child's teacher will send you the date that your child's class will be taking their pictures. We use ED Clark Photography.
