- The Golden Gavel: Governance Team of the Year Award
Dear EUSD families and staff,
As someone who is deeply proud to work in Encinitas, I have been saddened to see how our district has recently been portrayed in the media. I know many of you have reached out with these concerns as well. Unfortunately, there has been inaccurate information spread via television and social media. I would like to provide accurate information.
An EUSD staff member did allow a flier to be posted in Peachjar advertising a Boo Bash event put on by TransFamily Support Services, a nonprofit regional support agency for gender diverse children and families.
EUSD is not hosting the event. This is NOT a district event.
Peachjar is an optional information hub containing community events and opportunities for adults/families within the district. None of these fliers were sent to children and adults are charged with determining what is relevant for their families. All fliers are stamped with the words, “distribution of this flier does not imply endorsement by the Encinitas Union School District, its schools or staff and is distributed in compliance with federal and state law.”
Unfortunately, our district criteria for approving fliers was not followed, so therefore the flier was taken down almost 4 weeks ago shortly after it was distributed. Based on the error in approving the flier, we have adjusted our procedures to ensure fliers have a second review by a manager. This issue has been corrected with staff.
Over the past 4 weeks, individuals have altered the flier to make it look like EUSD was the host, however, the actual flier notes the location of the event in downtown San Diego. It was also altered to remove the language that says it is not endorsed by EUSD. It was altered to include some school phone numbers as well which resulted in harassing calls to school sites.
Additionally, there have been statements made that the Board approved the flier, this is inaccurate as this is a staff function. The Board does not approve any fliers.
I personally heard from families and outside individuals regarding their concerns or support for the inclusion of the flier. Please know we welcome opinions and feedback and hope that it is provided in ways that are productive and respectful.
Although this flier was approved in error and we regret this mistake, we are especially saddened that the situation has negatively impacted families of gender diverse children. It is our intention to always be safe and inclusive spaces for all children and families. EUSD continues to be steadfast in our commitment to be a supportive district for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, linguistic background, economic class, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and physical and cognitive ability.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Fall Activities Update
Fall is in the air and there is a buzz of activity on our campuses!
Schools have been heavily involved in assessments for learning as teachers prepare important information about student progress to share at conferences.
Our PTA Presidents/Committee Chairs and Encinitas Education Foundation Site Reps have been collaborating across the district to share the many exciting events they have planned. Fall Carnivals, Movie Nights, Red Ribbon Week, all school assemblies and book fairs to name a few. They are so dedicated to making sure the school experience is truly exceptional.
Last Friday, our teachers were all engaged in Professional Development at each school site to learn new strategies in mathematics, safety, school community building or engaging in instructional work in vertical teams. It is exciting to see the focus on teaching and learning.
Our instructional assistants are gearing up for training days during the afternoons of conferences. Everyone in EUSD is always learning.

School Spotlight: Ocean Knoll Elementary School
Each month, one school is highlighted in the newsletter. Recently, the Ocean Knoll Elementary School, participated in an evaluation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. We are proud to share this incredible summary from the evaluation.
“Ocean Knoll Elementary School embodies the International Baccalaureate mission and vision, this permeates the school default and character. The staff shares a deep passion for lifelong learningand this is transmitted to students; igniting with them the love of learning they carry on well beyond the school’s walls. The staff is highly reflective and committed towards ensuring the students social emotional and academic well being for all students. At Ocean Knoll Elementary School, it is very apparent that curriculum and instructional practices are student centered. This is informed by multiple data points and student needs, not by a we have always done it this way philosophy. The school’s program of inquiry offers multiple opportunities to explore multiple perspectives both in a local and global context. There is strong parent and community support that further nurtures the positive environment.”
The Golden Gavel: Governance Team of the Year Award
We are proud to share an update from the California School Boards Association (CSBA). Annually, CSBA honors the hard work and dedication of governing boards, district personnel, and community partners in supporting and creating innovative programs that improve student achievement and well-being.
This year, CSBA announced a brand-new award — The Golden Gavel: Governance Team of the Year Award. This award recognizes and celebrates exemplary and effective governance of an entire governance team. We recently received the amazing news that the EUSD Board of Trustees has been awarded the Golden Gavel! Congratulations to Marla Strich, Marlon Taylor, Emily Andrade, Raquel Pfiefer, and Jodie Williams. At the upcoming conference in December, the Board of Trustees will be on stage at the 2nd general session to be presented with this incredible honor.
A core value within EUSD has been the focus on the whole child. The Board remains steadfast on addressing the district goals of academic achievement, high quality staff, safe schools, community engagement and personalized learning. Our Board continues to advocate on behalf of all students and families through our work with equity to ensure all students feel welcome and are able to thrive. We appreciate our Board of Trustees and are proud to celebrate their honor! Thank you, EUSD Board of Trustees!
