Safety & Security @ Springville & Timberland
Additionally, we are asking all parents to check into the main office and to have a completed background check in the new district system if they would like to come into our school. This applies for volunteering as well as having lunch with their student.
We would appreciate help from all staff in communicating these important messages. Including them in your classroom communications as well as being present in the hall during arrival and dismissal is extremely helpful. We understand this is a change for parents, but we know they will understand this is about keeping students safe. Thanks so much for your help and support!
Reminders & Updates . . .
- Requesting Volunteers for Your Classroom - Our volunteer coordinator (Sheri Caron) is ready to input information from teachers regarding classroom volunteer needs. Please email Sheri ( vcoordinatorspringville@gmail.com) your desired schedule and the number of volunteers needed. Also, she would love your help reminding parents to update their profiles in the system, especially their privacy settings and their child's teacher as well as preferences for activities. Here is the link for parents: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage/Pages/default.aspx
- Springville Crews & Committees - A reminder to sign up for crews and committees at Springville on the Google Doc below. Please see email description of crews and committees for 2016-17. - Last call -- Springville Staff Information Card - A final reminder to complete the Staff Information Card using this Google form. We need one from each staff member.
Teaching & Learning
This year's focus on reading in the 90 minute block is a critical area of focus. Below is a summary of some critical practices from some of the experts we heard from in the summer and will continue learning from in the coming years:
Literacy Experts Agree!
(Allington, Glover, Serravallo, Ehrenworth, Wears)
1,500-2000 classroom library books are essential
Choice is essential for engagement
Increase volume of reading during the core (Goal = 60 minutes of the 90 min. block)
We must not fragment the school day for our most fragmented students
Students should be reading fun, fast and easy books all day long. If a child is truly engaged in a text that is challenging, coach them into the book with scaffolds.
Nudging students by starting with a strength and building toward a teaching point
Effective feedback is essential and has the highest effective size for growth
Compliment process and thinking over product
Build on a strength to move towards a teaching goal
Generalize feedback so it lives beyond the moment
Telling and reminding are not teaching
I would love to hear your thoughts & questions about some of these points. Let's talk!
KUDOS TO . . .
- Office Staff . . . for helping to communicate and support our safety policy by having all adults check into the main office. You are the front line that is often having hard conversations - thank you!!
- Ellen Arnold . . . for jumping into the Student Manager role and taking on anything and everything coming your way! Your support for staff and students is already felt throughout the school.
- Supervision Staff . . . big thank you's to those who are continuing to teach students expectations at lunch in the cafeteria, on the playground at recess, and at morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. I love that we are crew!
- All staff who are new . . . many of you are in brand new positions this year (new position, new grade level, new school) and are experiencing intense new learning every day (like me!) A reminder to be kind and patient with yourself -- we all want to be highly proficient right away but learning is a process!
EL Education Corner . . .
Several of you have asked about the EL Core Practices book that I brought back from my training -- it's a wonderful overview of the five dimensions of a quality EL school: curriculum, instruction, assessment, culture & character, and leadership. Each dimension has 5-10 core practices that represent the EL approach in a classroom and school. I found the EL Core Practices book on EL Commons, so I have included a link here:
