When Juan began with the ATP program three years ago, he was quiet and shy. That quickly changed in his second semester of the program, when he began a paid student internship in the cafes at Google, always attempting every task to the best of his ability. He persevered through the pandemic, and he made large gains in several skill areas.
Juan is aging out of the ATP and will be working full-time at State Street Market in Los Altos. When asked what he would like to spend his first paycheck on, he said that he was going to pay rent for his parents. Read more about Juan here.
The National Japanese Exam (NJE) is an online, proficiency-oriented, standards-based, and culture-related assessment tool for students who are studying Japanese as a second language. It can be used to recognize students' achievements in the study of Japanese and to stimulate their further interest in learning the language.
Mountain View students who took the exam excelled, and took home numerous awards, with student Emma Zhang earning a prestigious Gold Medal award in Japanese 2. Read the summary of the students' accomplishments here.

MVLA ASSIGNED TOP BOND RATINGS BY MOODY'S
MVLA's careful fiscal management and stable financial position have Moody's Investors Service, assigning MVLA an Aaa rating, judged to be its highest quality rating. These ratings are given in advance of bond sales.
Last month, the MVLA Board of Trustees approved the issuance of up to $68 million in general obligation bonds; it would be the third such issuance since Measure E was approved in 2018. The two prior issuances were also assigned the Aaa designation. Read more here.
California's Legislature recognizes the essential contributions of classified school employees and named the third full week of May (May 15-21, 2022) "Classified School Employee Week" to honor these contributions.
MVLA celebrated this honor by participating in the California School Employee Association's Appreciating Classified Employees (ACE) program. MVLA was one of 10 school districts in California selected to participate in the program, which allows school district administrators and elected officials a chance to "walk a mile" in classified employees' shoes. Check out the photos here, courtesy Tomoki Chien. Read a write-up in the Los Altos Town Crier here.
MVLA Scholars is now recruiting for the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Mentoring Program that pairs MVHS Seniors and Juniors in the AVID Class with caring community members who help students understand, explore and succeed in the college application process. Mentors do NOT have to be experts in the college application process, but they do need to be able to commit to regularly attending the class each week during the 2022-23 school year at MVHS. To learn more, read the presentation and then complete the interest form.
