From The Principal
Our STAAR testing season officially begins on April 7th with the 5th grade Math STAAR and April 8th 5th grade Reading STAAR. Our students and teachers have been working very hard in preparation for the test. We look forward to our students having the opportunity to shine during state assessment.
We are also ending the 3rd nine weeks and beginning the last grading period when we get back from spring break. Thank you for your incredible support of your children and the staff of Collins as we continue this school year’s journey. We still have so much learning ahead of us in April and May.

Attendance
As we progress through the school year, please continue to remember the importance of school attendance and arriving to school on time. In addition, children who arrive late to school miss the important groundwork that is laid by teachers at the beginning of the day.
The instruction and learning that occur on a daily basis in the classroom is our central mission. Parents who make regular school attendance and punctuality a high priority are helping their children learn to accept responsibility, which is an important lesson for a successful life.
As we work to increase Collins Intermediate’s daily attendance – please continue to support your child’s educational process by limiting the amount of school missed except for illness. Collins Intermediate daily goal is 98.5%.
3rd Grading Period
Our Attendance is critically low!
It is imperative that your child is at school to receive the quality instruction that is necessary to obtain the skills needed for current and future academic success. The state of Texas uses attendance rates as part of the calculations for Academic Distinctions. If attendance continues to drop at this rate, it could potentially cause Collins to lose our Distinctions from TEA. We know illness and family emergencies are unavoidable but please try to avoid any unnecessary absences or vacations.
Hours of Missed Instruction (Early Checkout) as of March 4th = 5361 Hours

The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees honored several individuals with an Ambassador Award when Board Members John Husbands and Scott Moore, along with Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null, visited Ride Elementary, David Elementary, Collins Intermediate, and Lamar Elementary on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
The Board of Trustees began the Ambassador Awards to recognize individuals for their positive contributions to campus life and campus climate. Throughout the year, each campus is visited by one or more members of the Board who surprise the award recipients while they are performing their duties as either a student or an employee.
Counselor Updates from Mrs. McCure
Off Campus PE (OCPE)– Private PE
Attention 6th grade parents of students going to 7th grade for 2020-2021and your student is interested in Off Campus PE - often called Private PE
The window for completing the enrollment forms is open from March 16, 2020 thru May 1, 2020. Forms must be completed online during this window. Parents, please know that OCPE is a year long commitment. You cannot change vendor without prior approval from the Conroe ISD Coordinator of Physical Education. You can only participate in OCPE using one vendor. The vendor is responsible for sending your student’s grades on time to avoid your child receiving a zero. Completing the course selection form for KNOX does not enroll you in OCPE.

If your child is 11 years old, Spring Break is a great time to go get those 11 year old vaccines! This includes the Tdap (Tetanus booster) and MCV4 (meningitis) vaccines which are required for 7th grade. Please bring a copy of the shot record to the school when we resume after Spring Break.
If your child was referred for vision or hearing problems, Spring Break is also a great time to get that checked out. I sent out letters last week to students I needed to follow up on for hearing or vision. If you visit the doctor, please send a note to the clinic if treatment, such as glasses, was prescribed. Our state report is due soon and I need documentation to complete the referrals. A copy of the glasses prescription will suffice.
Thank you and have a wonderful Spring Break!

Art
In Mr. Hunt’s art class, we are creating our own shoe sculptures out of cardboard! We started with an orthographic drawing, learned about the three main types of sculpture, then began to create unique, wearable pieces of art! With Mrs. Ferguson, students are getting their hands dirty making clay mugs using our art-fee-funded brand-new slab roller! Don’t they look great?!
