Albany Community School News - April!

ACS Vision: We strive to provide an environment where students will develop to their fullest.

Hello Albany Families,

Our students had a wonderful time at Jay Peak Water Park! Congratulations to them for earning this by exhibiting our school wide expectations for behavior. We have a great group of students and they really represented Albany well while we were there! Thank you to our middle schoolers for going on the tube waterslides with our younger students. I appreciate the caring community we have.

Our 3rd-8th graders will be taking state testing the week of May 1. They will be completing a little over an hour each day. Please make sure they get get enough sleep the night before and are at school early enough to get breakfast and settle in. Testing will start first thing in the morning. More info. will be sent home.

8th Grade Graduation will be Wednesday, June 14 at 5 PM. Please join us in celebrating them!

Congratulations to Ms. Gonyaw who is going to be a special educator in our building next year! We look forward to having her in this capacity and continuing to support our students.

We have begun to post positions for next school year. We are currently looking for a PT Food Assistant, SEL Specialist, elementary teacher, music teacher, paras, and we always need subs. Kindergarten with Mr. S

Kindergarteners chose to do a hike for their class PBIS celebration last month. We hiked the dangerous tundra to a spot deep in a hidden forest where we built snow and stick creations. Here's some pics:

First Grade w/ Mrs. Wheeler

First grade started a few new units this month. In math we moved from learning to represent and solve comparison problems to simplifying problems with three addends. We started learning about the Moon and Stars. Students learned about the phases of the moon and what causes craters. We made our own moons and did an experiment with flour and rocks to figure out how craters are formed!

Second and Third Grade with Ms. Gonyaw

2/3 have been working on pollination and informational writing with scientific drawings. During skills block, they are becoming more fluent readers and better spellers. In second grade math, students are learning about the attributes of shapes and units- halves, thirds, and quarters. Next we will work on learning time. Students enjoyed the last days of snow and are embracing this warmer weather! Soon we'll be planting seeds for our school garden. The kids look great in their new school shirts! Not everyone wanted to be in the photo. Maybe next time. I am very proud of our class for earning a celebration. It was fun to wear pj's and watch a movie. Hotel Transylvania ll was funny. Thank you to Finley's family for making the yummy popcorn and to Alexis' family for the beautiful cake. It was a great day!

Third and Fourth grade w/ Ms. Perry

This month the 3rd and 4th grade has been working with Ms. Gabi on many things like how everyone is different, what it looks like to be a kind, safe and an accepting learner, along with poor and good choices. In math we are working on division and multiplication. And now that the weather is nice we are able to enjoy the last part of our day outside!

Middle School Humanities w/ Ms. Lillis

5/6 - We're learning how coffee is grown in the rainforest and the effect it has on migratory birds. Be on the lookout for their informative brochures!

7 - We're focusing on analyzing information and writing summaries. Students are learning these skills through the lens of historical epidemics.

8 - Students are delving into the history of the Holocaust. Lots of important conversations are being had!

Middle School Math with Mx. J

On Wednesday, April 4th, the middle schoolers completed the Spring STAR 360 Math Assessment. This is a Computer Adapted Test that all students in the district complete three times a year. As part of the process, I ask students to use paper and pencil to “show their work.” Below are images of student calculations.

Middle School Science with Ms. Deonigi

Lately in science class, students have been learning life science by studying cells. We have been learning about the organelles, their functions, prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells, and the 6 Kingdoms of life. Students were able to show off their knowledge of the cell by building edible candy cells, and made some beautiful creations!

PE with Mr. Warriner

This month in Physical Education we have been playing kickball, capture the flag and line soccer. It is nice to get the kids out in the sun. We finished up our last winter activity make up at Jay Peak. During May we look forward to having the Craftsbury Outdoor Center back to work with our elementary students on their mountain biking skills.
