A Devotional from Kristen Kreutner
Matthew 6:19-24
Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” Thank you for choosing to devote your life to transforming kids so they are welcomed into the Kingdom of heaven. God honors your time, heart, and passion for education even when it may not feel so on Earth. We know public school teachers make more per year. They cannot store up the treasures God is talking about because they cannot share Jesus with their students. Thank you for taking time to pray, worship, and bless the families in your care for God’s glory.

IMPORTANT
On Wednesday, January 16th, Dorian will send their photographer to take pictures nearly all day at NCA. Pictures will be mostly ‘staged’ and useable for promotional purposes:
You will be notified if the photographer will be coming to your classes.
Please review the "no photo list". When Dorian enters the classroom, they will ask the teacher to pull those students to the side.
This and That!!
As you are aware the parent newsletter and the staff newsletter shared that lunch bags and the items inside such as main containers, water bottles, and milk boxes must be labelled.
If parents bring lunch bags without the child's name on, please write the child’s name on masking tape and place it on the lunch bag. The main reason for doing this is for our children's safety. It also helps other teachers that come in and out of the rooms so that they can help with food safely. It is a licensing requirement as well.
Student Head Count
Please keep count of your students at all times, especially during the transition times and when kids are dropped off and picked up. It is for the safety of children and licensing.
PLEASE READ STAFF NEWSLETTERS, PARENT NEWSLETTERS AS WELL AS EMAILS!!!
WAC Compliance:
This is the final installment in my series on addressing challenging behaviors. Would you believe it if I told you that most challenging behaviors can actually be prevented? In Prevent-Teach-Reinforce for Young Children (PTR-YC), the authors state, “There is much that can be done in the realm of universal strategies that can promote resilience and prevent the emergence of social and emotional difficulties.” The term “universal strategies” refers to classroom-wide practices that have an effect on everyone present.
Implementing these universal strategies helps you create a high quality environment that reduces the chances of experiencing challenging behavior. Take a look at the five universal strategies below and notice which practices you are already using and which you need to implement as soon as possible.
1. Use a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative/neutral attention. It’s important that you are careful to recognize when children behave appropriately. If they are only given attention when they are exhibiting unwanted behaviors, they will exhibit more of those behaviors. Be sure all children receive at least five positive interactions with teachers for each negative interaction.
2. Use predictable and comprehensible schedules and routines. The more predictable the environment, the safer a child feels. Your schedule should be explained to children and any changes should also be discussed with children. Otherwise, the schedule is not predictable enough to be a prevention aid.
3. Use routines within routines to heighten predictability. PTR-YC provides the example of a daily circle time built into the schedule. To be a prevention aid, the circle time should also have routines within that activity, such as a song sung each time as the children find their seats.
4. Teach behavioral expectations directly. Teachers often assume that misbehavior is intentional noncompliance, when in reality, the child has not been taught exactly and explicitly how to behave. Children should be taught the specific behavioral expectations for each activity and routine that is performed throughout the day.
5. Teach peer-related social skills. These include sharing, taking turns, and other activities that require interaction. Children need to be taught how to function in these situations. Social skills are complex and often frustrating for young children to master. They need lots of instruction and practice throughout the entire day.
