Thomas Nelson, the Peninsula’s Community College, is offering three STEM-focused camps in Summer 2015, for middle and high school students.

Now in its fifth year, this camp will be held June 24-27, 2015. Focusing on students in rising 7 to 10 grades, the camp is designed to inspire the next generation of inventors, engineers, manufacturers and entrepreneurs, by providing participants a completely hands-on introduction to 21st century manufacturing technology and basic entrepreneurial skills.

This is the third year for this camp and it is scheduled for July 20-25, 2015. Though preference is given to students who have previously attended Peninsula K-Next! any student in rising grades 7 to 10 can apply. Imagineering! is designed to be very entrepreneurial and hands-on! It provides students a greater opportunity to explore the world of entrepreneurship from product concept to prototyping using in-depth CAD (computer assisted design) programs and 3D printing machines! Students develop a production plan and a business plan and have to prepare a presentation. On the final day of the Imagineering camp, student “companies” are required to present their products to an “Angel Investors” team of judges in an effort to obtain funding for their product, very akin to the “Shark Tank” TV program!

This is the first year for the Hover Games! and it is scheduled for August 10-16, 2015. Though preference is given to students who have previously attended Imagineering! , any student in rising grades 8 to 11 can apply.

This camp will focus on the building, programming and flying of a “quadcopter”, to include the possible design and manufacturing of parts using CAD and 3D printers. Besides visiting state-of-the-art companies operating in the world of unmanned aerial systems (drones!) - to include NASA Langley - students will have the opportunity to develop their skills to compete in the camp’s final competition, a “rodeo”.

Outdoor Education provides activities designed to introduce various outdoor skills that will enhance both mental and physical well-being. Emphasis is on skill development, safety practices, responsibility, teamwork and self-awareness through experiential learning. Skills include, but are not limited to, hiking, biking, canoeing, cooperative games, ropes initiatives, orienteering, camping, archery and a variety of outdoor experiences. These courses are held at Newport News Park. Outdoor Education I is a prerequisite for Outdoor Education II.

Bluebird Gap Farm offers an exciting, family-oriented adventure and educational experience rarely see in an urban environment. The 60-acre farm has about 150 domestic and wild animals, including everything from the usual array of farm animals to a raccoon, birds of prey, whitetail deer, tortoises, and peacocks.

Chippokes plantation State Park is one of the oldest working farms in the United States. Chippokes is a living historical exhibit located in a rural agricultural area along the James River in Surry County. The park has a wide variety of traditional park offerings, including a swimming complex, visitor center, picnic facilities, and hiking and biking trails. The plantation has kept its original boundaries since the 1600s and has a variety of cultivated gardens and native woodland. The formal gardens surrounding the Chippokes Mansion are accented by azaleas, crepe myrtle, boxwood and seasonal flowers. The plantation is also home to the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum.

The College of William and Mary Saturday/Summer Enrichment Program for Gifted Learners is offering. Programs for high ability students in Kindergarten through grade 11 may apply for enrollment in the Saturday/Summer Enrichment Program courses. These courses are offered each year at the College of William and Mary and at various locations in Richmond and Washington, DC during fall, spring, and summer sessions. This enrichment program enables students to explore specialized topics not typically studied in the regular classroom.

Camp Launch

Born out of a desire to help gifted students from all socioeconomic levels, Camp Launch will provide eligible 7th and 8th grade students with enrichment and academic opportunities. The children are recruited from school districts around Virginia. They will participate in a two week residential program with courses in STEM, writing, and personal development. Camp Launch is funded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation and is only the beginning of the Center for Gifted Education’s goal to bring educational equality to all gifted students.

Camp Launch has four goals:

· To deliver advanced instruction in academic content, such as STEM, writing, academic self-efficacy and personal development.

· To provide enrichment opportunities in a wide variety of content areas.

· To encourage the development of peer support networks.

· To develop in campers a future orientation that includes a college education, along with preparation that will help them take advantage of enabling opportunities to achieve that goal.

Civil War Children's Camp (June 22 - June 26 & July 27 - July 30) 9am - 3pm

Children can learn about America's rich military heritage; teamwork, leadership skills and get exercise too. This camp is for boys and girls ages 8-13. Experiences include camp life, drills, battles and basic soldier's equipment. Registration and pre-payment are required. Click here to download the Kids Camp registration form.

Endview Plantation was built in 1769 by William Harwood. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Endview's owner, Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis, formed the Warwick Beauregards, which became Company H, 32nd Virginia Volunteer Infantry. During the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, Endview served as headquarters for Confederate generals McLaws and Toombs. The site is maintained today as a living history museum.

Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield make up what is known as the Colonial National Historical Park. Lee Hall Mansion is the only large antebellum plantation house remaining on the lower Virginia Peninsula. Completed in 1859, Lee Hall Mansion was home to affluent planter Richard Decauter Lee, his wife Martha, and their children. Only three years after the house's completion, the Lees fled their home as the Peninsula became one of the first battlegrounds of the Civil War. Between April and May of 1862, the house was used as a Confederate headquarters by Major General John B. Magruder and General Joseph E. Johnston. However, on May 3, 1862, the Confederate Army was ordered to retreat. A small skirmish was fought on the property by the retreating Confederates and Union cavalry on May 4, 1862. The Peninsula remained under Union control until the end of the war. The Lees eventually returned to the house and resided there until 1871. Since then, many different individuals have owned Lee Hall Mansion.

Volunteers lead visitors through seven rooms, beautifully decorated in the style of the mid-19th century. Tours highlight plantation life, furnishings, architecture, Richard D. Lee and his family, and the impact the Civil War had on local society.

Summer ArtVentures

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center has revamped its ArtVentures camps for the summer of 2015! Camps will now be offered for both half-day (9.a.m to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and full day options (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with optional early drop-off and delayed pick-up times for added convenience. Every week will feature both morning and afternoon sessions for ages 5-8 and 9-12. Choose from four themed weeks, packed with lessons in a variety of media. Each camp will end with a presentation for parents and loved ones to see the young artists' creations! Camp registrations continue up until one week before each camp commences.

Cool Science Camps

Here at the Virginia Air & Space Center, we think science is cool...very cool! We see it every day in our live science demonstrations, birthday parties, and camp programs. Summer Camps 2015

Week-long camps are offered for ages 4 through grade 5. Museum educators help children explore nature and space through hands-on activities, visits through the Museum and live touchable animals. Class size is limited to 10 – 12 children, so sign up early! A minimum enrollment is established for each class and must be met at least five days prior to the first class meeting. You may cancel up to one week before class, unless otherwise stated, and receive a refund less a $10 handling fee. After that time, no refunds can be made. If the Virginia Living Museum cancels the program, a full refund will be issued. Members receive a discount on all classes. Join now.

Fork Union Military Academy's Summer School provides a non-military program of academic study, athletic activities, and planned enrichment trips. The session is designed to help students in grades 7-12 earn academic credit to improve their grades and transcript record through repeat work, improve study habits, increase comprehensive knowledge base for college preparation, and.have the opportunity to take interesting and enriching elective courses in a fun summer setting.

The four-week summer school program typically begins in early July. Classes, taught by the Academy's regular faculty, are held six days a week. Students must have completed grade 7 to be considered for admission.

You’ll expand your skills as you work with Hollins faculty and with staff members from Mill Mountain Theatre, the region’s premiere professional theatre.

Advanced riders learn from college instructors about hunter/jumper riding and caring for horses. Campers also have access to the same amenities used by our nationally recognized riding team. The Citizen Police Academy for Youth gives boys and girls between 14 and 17 years of age an inside look at local law enforcement through a series of a variety of subjects pertaining to law enforcement. Junior Volunteer Program
Each summer, Riverside Regional Medical Center invites local teens to experience the world of healthcare as junior volunteers. The Junior Volunteer program is an eight week program open to students who are between the ages of 14 (by June 15) and 17 and meet the minimum requirements of the application process. The Junior Volunteer Program application process is a competitive one. Applications are accepted through May 2. Students must be in good academic standing, have parental permission and attend mandatory orientation.

Junior Volunteering develops such skills as:

Junior Volunteer Program

Each summer, we look for mature, dedicated high school students (ages 15 and older) who want to make a difference in themselves and their community. Please note that there are a limited number of available volunteer spots. We invite students who excel in the qualities listed above and who would benefit from our program. For best selection of positions, please apply by May 1.

Training for summer youth volunteers begins in early June. Please apply early. Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis.

There is a TRAINING FEE of $20 for volunteers accepted into the program. No fee will be required for applying, any volunteer accepted into the program will be required to pay this one time fee.

When you join our volunteer team, you can make a difference by fostering our animals, spending one-on-one time with them, taking them out to community events, and matching potential adopters with their pet companions.

Volunteer Requirements:

You must be able to commit at least 4 hours per month for 3 months. We recommend that volunteers have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination, although it is not required.

We encourage all qualified volunteers to apply; unfortunately we are unable to accept court ordered community service requests at this time.not required.You must be at least 16 years of age. Our dog squad and web photographer volunteers must be at least 18 years old and complete our animal handling class. Opportunities are available for parent and child volunteer teams, the child must be a minimum of 13 years of age and accompanied by a legal guardian.

The Youth Leadership Alliance of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber Foundation is an intensive community immersion summer program that changes the perception of students through the lens of leadership. In one week, students experience a crash course in what the Peninsula business community has to offer, including entertainment, retail, technology, public safety, transportation, government & public policy.
