A Message from the Superintendent A Message from the Superintendent

I am proud to announce Alvord has a new look and attitude as we head into 2023. See our new logo and our new Vision, Mission, and Core Values below.

We created our new brand after listening to you over the past eighteen months. Beginning in July, 2021, we have conducted hundreds of focus group meetings with students, staff, parents, and a diverse group of community members to identify our brand strengths and our brand challenges. This input was collected so we could better understand what everyone needs and expects from the Alvord brand, as well as what everyone wants from our new strategic plan in the coming months. In the Post-COVID era, we believe it is important to re-establish our presence as the ideal option as your education partner. Stay tuned to my weekly messages for regular updates on the progress of our new strategic plan and how you can provide input.

It is important to the Board of Education and our entire organization that we know that our stakeholders are proud of the work we do in Alvord. Our new brand identity reflects that pride.

If you have been reading my weekly messages, you are already aware that we have made great strides during the COVID-era in response to the pandemic and its impact on students and staff. The post-COVID era has presented a new set of challenges as we now refocus our efforts on learning loss, chronic absenteeism, attention disorders, staffing shortages, and students’ and staffs' mental health needs. Our primary strategies will address these key areas, as well as building the capacity in our district to support every student's goals. Our new motto, Every Student. By Name speaks to the uniqueness of every child and our commitment to make every student feel accepted, wanted, and loved.

Our new logo pays homage to Western Riverside County’s agricultural roots and its role in the history and development of the region. The establishment of the citrus industry in Western Riverside is referred to as California's Gold Rush of a different kind. The logo was developed to signify, through color and form, our vibrant community and its diverse cultures. The logo is the crown jewel of the Alvord brand and the visual representation of the exciting vision we have for our district. The bright colors capture the energy at which we want to pursue our mission to serve our students. The visual properties of the logo will serve as a canvas on which students will become ambassadors of these values through their own explorations.

Thanks to our voters, we passed Measure J, our $248M school facilities bond, this past November. Our community's investment in our schools will provide us with valuable resources to support our vision to build world-class and highly competitive schools.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR TESTING BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL ON JANUARY 3

While Riverside County's COVID-19 Community Level has slightly declined since last week, the level remained elevated for the fourth consecutive week. We provided all students and staff with testing kits prior to winter recess. Please test before returning to school on Tuesday. For details on the campaign and instructions in the event of a positive test, click here.

SCHOOL SAFETY WEEKLY UPDATE

If you missed my message before the break regarding three of our middle school students who were hospitalized on December 15 after eating something laced with marijuana early in the school day, please take some time to discuss with your children the dangers of ingesting any food items that they are given by others. In total, ten students ingested the marijuana edibles at school and had to be treated by health professionals. Thankfully, the students have all recovered. It's illegal to distribute and consume marijuana products on campus. Please discuss the dangers of drug experimentation with your child before it's too late.

IN CLOSING

On behalf of the Board of Education, I hope your holiday season was peaceful and joyous. Since 2020, the the impact of the pandemic has transformed the holidays for many people either by forcing us to break long-standing traditions of gathering and reunions or because loved ones have been lost. I hope your holiday was perfect, but if you are among those whose holiday has been transformed, I hope you were still able to find some peace and comfort.

Let's continue to work together to make the second half of the school year a positive and memorable experience for all students.

In partnership,

Allan Mucerino
