Summer at SPCL
Our end-of-the-year newsletter
PROGRAMMING
Sneaker Design Day
Thanks to a partnership with Diversity in Design and Gretel NYC, a graphic design firm, students spent a day designing and creating their Vans x Design shoes.
Lunch Workshops
We hosted a bunch of lunch workshops thanks to our student librarians, Ria and Chris. Student made zines, buttons, puzzles, and more!
The Button Maker is here!
Thanks to New Design High School, we now have two button makers at the ready for your next school project! We made magnetic poetry buttons for Poetry month in April.
Student and Staff Bookclubs
Thanks to our partnerships with NYPL and MyLibraryNYC, we were able to host five book clubs respectively for both students and staff.
Yu&Me Books Collab
We hosted four incredible author events with Yu&Me Books this year, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate in the future!
- Lunar New Year Children's Book Festival
- Weike Wang in conversation with Cathy Park Hong
- Stephanie Foo in conversation with Qian Julie Wang & Natalie Gutierrez
- Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai and Vanessa Chan
Books and books!
We continued to grow our robust collection of books, and thanks to all five schools, we were able to invest in $11,775 worth of books! Thanks to our supportive school administration, we look forward to doing this again next year!
GRANTS!
This year we were blessed with multiple grants which we used to help students get the most out of their educational experience.
- Astor Grant (New Visions) - $3750 - used to set up the podcast studio
- Lambda Literary Grant - six-week in-house residency with author Sarah Moon
- Finalist in the VITAL Libraries Grant - We were so close to a $50,000 grant to modernize our library (Don't worry. We'll try again next year!)
- Little Free Library - ~$300 We got our own chartered Little Free Library located in the lobby of our building.
- Global Climate Change Grant (Office of Library Services) - $500 worth of books for our collection on global climate change
- Build Up Grant (Office of Library Services) - $1300 for the purchase of ebooks/audiobooks for our summer reading program
Professional Development
Women and the American Story
This year, I worked with the NY Historical Society as an ambassador for their "Women and the American Story" curriculum. If you're interested in learning more about this program, please let me know so that we can schedule a PD!
Using AI in the Classroom
I attended an ISTE U course on AI and its uses in the classroom. Why not spend this summer thinking about how AI could impact/influence your classroom experience?
Summer Reading
Because Seward Park Campus Library is closed in the summer, all of our holdings will be done virtually through Sora. Here's how to get connected! More information on our website!
How to Use Sora
Future Plans
We are in the process of building out our podcast studio and recording studio. Thanks to a partnership with The Hip Hop Re-Education project, we've had a healthy number of students pass through their music production classes. We are looking for donors, vendors, and partners to help build the back room into a state-of-the-art experience for our students.
And finally, some numbers...
This year, we:
- Saw 7,388 unique sign-ins in the library.
- Checked out 1190 books.
- Housed 9,768 titles in the library with 12,083 total copies of books.
- Served 2,165 patrons.
- Made countless dreams come true. ;)
Happy summer, everyone!
