Greetings Brookwood Families,

There are so many exciting things happening in the district. Please take a look at the upcoming dates that showcase these events. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's school.

For the past week, students in both building have been busy taking STAR or MAP testing. This data helps us direct our instruction to match the needs for the students. In addition, it gives our 8th graders fantastic information when selecting their classes for high school.

Thank you to our staff for their extra efforts as we wrap up "Red Ribbon Week." They did a great job bringing awareness to our students in an age and developmentally appropriate way. Also, congratulations to our Middle School Boys Basketball Team that ended their season last week with a win over Williams Bay.

Winter indeed is upon us, and the weather is COLD! Friendly reminder to please ensure that your student is dressed for the elements with a zipped up winter coat, mittens/gloves, hat, boots etc.

Also - BMS parents of 4th and 5th graders: please feel free to drop off your child at the front doors on those extra cold days so that they don't need to walk all the way around to the 4/5 wing entrance.

Students observed going above and beyond in being kind, being safe, and/or being responsible are issued “BE BROOKWOOD” tickets throughout their school week. Each week we randomly select students from this group and acknowledge them in our morning announcements and in the weekly MUSTANG MINUTE. This week’s drawing winners are:

The students in Mrs. Jahns' classroom are learning about place value. They have used base ten blocks to help visualize and manipulate turning ten "cubes" into a "ten stick." In addition, they have played games and done math activities to strengthen their skills. As Fred Rogers said, "play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning." This has helped students understand that each digit in a two-digit number has a unique value. The hard work they are doing now is helping to lay the foundation for being able to add and subtract two-digit numbers.

Students in Mrs. Cottrell's 6th Grade Science class are learning about how waves transfer energy. They learned that in electromagnetic waves, energy is transferred through vibrations of electric and magnetic fields. In sound waves, energy is transferred through vibration of air particles or particles of a solid through which the sound travels. In water waves, energy is transferred through the vibration of the water particles. In a culminating lab activity, students identified wave parts and wave measurements using a slinky. They learned that energy can change a wave's amplitude, frequency, and speed. Way to go, BMS scientists!

GREAT news! Eighth Grade BMS student, Alyssa Adams, was one of just 12 winners in the Society's Assets "Ability Not Disability" poster contest. The contest was open to students in Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha counties. Alyssa was awarded 3rd place in her age category (grades 6-8) and received a laminated copy of her artwork, a winner's ribbon, and a Target gift card. Best of all: her work is printed in the Society's Assets 2022 calendar. A copy of her artwork is also on display at Society's Assets Racine office. We are so proud of you, Alyssa! Congratulations!

Often parents want to know how they can help their child increase their social skills, be a better friend or minimize friendship conflicts. One way to do this is by helping them understand social cues (4 types). You can help your child better read and understand social cues by talking about social cues that come up in stories that you read together or tv shows/movies that you watch together, modeling or talking through how you read a social cue in a certain situation they witnessed. If you notice that your child misread a social cue, calmly talk to your child about how they could have read the cue differently, what you saw and how that might have changed the situation. Please use the link if you want more information about social cues and how to help your child.

Thanks so much for signing up your child for Saturday Morning Basketball. I'm looking forward to the next five weeks! Click the button below to order a Brookwood Basketball t-shirt. You may order as many as you'd like - get one for the whole family! T-shirts are not required to participate in Saturday Morning Basketball, but they are fun swag. :)

Orders must be placed by the end of the day Sunday, January 30th.

As a reminder, K-2 meets from 10am-11am in the BMS gym, and 3rd-5th meets from 11am-12pm. See you Saturday!

Mrs. Garrett will be offering an After School Art Club for grades 6-8th on THURSDAYS in FEBRUARY. In order to attend, you MUST sign up by the art room. The classes are limited to 15 students.

Guth Games are BACK!!! For those not in the "know", Guth Games are fun exercise activities, sports, and games hosted by Personal Wellness teacher, Mr. Guth, in the gym during the colder months of the school year. This is a GREAT way to get students moving right away in the morning to kickstart their day!
