What is ASVAB and who should take it?

The ASVAB, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is a test that measures abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It is also a highly effective career exploration exam for those students not wishing to enter the military, but hoping to figure out the best career pathway available to them. The test is being offered to any student in grade 10, 11 or 12. There is no cost to take this test.

Test date and registration

• The ASVAB will be given on Wednesday, April 5 at 8:00am.

• Students MUST sign up by Wednesday, March 29 via the google doc that was sent to their student gmail last week.

• The test may take up to three hours.

• SPACE IS LIMITED SO THOSE INTERESTED NEED TO SIGN UP RIGHT AWAY.

Senior Dues: $75 (cash, check, or money order accepted)

• Dues should be paid by Friday, March 24

• Senior shirts will be ordered by April 3

Cap and Gown Delivery: Monday, March 27, and Friday, April 21

The Virginia School Boards Association is holding a personal essay/speaking contest where the finalists will have an opportunity to present before an audience of more than 300 school board members and administrators at the 2023 VSBA Conference on Education held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump on July 13, 2023.

This is the third year the Virginia School Boards Association will hold this contest with hope that this contest will bring out the very best in students’ writing and speaking efforts to allow our attendees to witness examples of the bright, thoughtful, and accomplished students from around the Commonwealth. This years topic is The Meaning of Civility.

Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous sponsor, the top finalist will receive a $500 scholarship. Submissions are open to all Virginia public high school students (grades 9-12) as a great opportunity to share their unique voices as well as compete for funds to further their education.

RICHMOND — Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow announced Feb. 13 that the Virginia Department of Education has launched “Engage Virginia,” an academic recovery and coaching program to help students recover from the impact of the pandemic on learning, attendance and related issues.

Engage Virginia services are available to students, families and schools at no cost through a partnership between VDOE and Graduation Alliance, a Salt Lake City-based education services provider specializing in online programs for students and state and local education agencies.

“Engage Virginia will supplement the efforts already underway in our school divisions in partnership with VDOE to meet the needs of students still struggling with academic, attendance, mental health issues,” Balow said. “It is our goal to fill every available slot with students who can benefit from this support.”

School divisions opt-in to participate in Engage Virginia and refer students and families to the program. Parents in non-participating divisions may enroll their children by registering directly on the Engage Virginia website.

Participating students and families are assigned an academic success coach to help them navigate the program and access online and in-person services, including:

• Academic resources
• Referrals for community services.
• 24/7 academic tutoring.
• Homework assistance.
• Motivational coaching.
• Study and time-management skills coaching.
• Test preparation.
• Feedback on resumes and cover letters.

The 2022 General Assembly appropriated $3.5 million for VDOE to create an online program to help school divisions provide support and coaching for disengaged, chronically absent and struggling students. VDOE contracted with Graduation Alliance to create Engage Virginia and provide support for up to18,500 students statewide.
