Criminal Justice 1 students began learning about the use of force and response to resistance. They discussed the importance of giving clear, professional verbal commands while taking compliant and non-compliant subjects into custody. Students practiced handcuffing techniques, as well as how to respond when faced with non-compliant subjects who pose a significant threat. ECG hosted use of force training expert, Tony Martin, from Lynchburg Police Department, and the students learned about landmark court case decisions impacting use of force. Our guest speaker also talked with students about use of force considerations. Thank you, LPD, for partnering with us!

The E.C. Glass French Department has been selected to participate in a pilot program of This Is Language, a software program for language learners that consists of activities centered around interviews with authentic French speakers and a vocabulary and grammar competition where students earn points as they learn and can choose to compete internationally. Both Madame Baldwin and Madame Mayhew will receive a limited number of licenses to use with a class of their choosing for the year-long pilot program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education.

Congratulations to Madame Mayhew’s 6th period Advanced French IV and AP French V class for receiving recognition as being Leaderboard Champions for the month of August and beginning of September. Students earned enough points to be recognized as one of the Top 3 schools internationally, currently using this program.They are featured in the This Is Language newsletter for those schools who subscribe to the program. Most students enjoy playing Nutty Tilez, a vocab and grammar game with 50 levels, where students can test out or level up at any given time and earn points while they learn. (See the feature below)

On October 29th our wonderful ECG parents hosted a chili luncheon for the ECG faculty and staff. The day was full of delicious home cooked chili with all the fixins. ECG faculty and staff would like to thank all the parents that participated in the amazing luncheon.

E. C. Glass culinary arts students prepared a delicious breakfast for Virginia legislators, school board members and guest who packed the Marie Waller Lecture Hall. Then after the morning presentation, legislators visited the Advanced Government class where they answered students’ questions about legislation related to a variety of topics.

About 20 E. C. Glass High School art students and their teacher Kimberly Gibson-McDonald are helping keep the James River clean by transforming the school’s storm drains into works of art. ECG art students painted several storm drains as a way of promoting the importance of keeping those drains free of trash, oil, gasoline, pet waste and other contaminants that would eventually be carried into the James River. The students used the phrase “Only Rain Down the Drain” in their designs. This project is the latest phase of ArtStorm 2019, which is sponsored by Lynchburg Water Resources and the James River Council for the Arts and Humanities. The first phases involved artists decorating numerous storm drains in downtown Lynchburg and along Fifth Street.

E.C. Glass will have the great privilege of hosting Holocaust survivor Halina Yassaroff Peabody for a morning assembly on November 14th. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for students and staff alike.
