Franklin Families and Students,
November marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month, when we honor and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Native Peoples. One method to honor the contributions of Indigenous Peoples is through Land Acknowledgement. As stated on the Duwamish Tribe website, “land acknowledgment is a traditional custom dating back centuries for many Native communities and nations. For non-Indigenous communities, land acknowledgment is a powerful way of showing respect and honoring the Indigenous Peoples of the land on which we work and live. Acknowledgment is a simple way of resisting the erasure of Indigenous histories and working towards honoring and inviting the truth.” As we work, learn, and play at Franklin HS and live and thrive in our SE Portland community, we recognize that these lands were first inhabited and cultivated by the Clackamas, Cowlitz, Confederated Tribes of the Siletz and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde.
Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that Franklin High School and every space that we utilize during the many years of a student’s learning journey has taken place on indigenous lands. As such, we honor the tribal people whose way of life, traditions, culture, and in every sense their ways of being was taken from them. Acknowledgement is a simple, powerful way of showing respect for those whose land we are on and a step toward correcting the stories, practices, languages, and art that erase indigenous people’s history and culture and toward inviting and honoring the truth and relationships with indigenous land resources and communities.
Indigenous people have lived here since time immemorial. The Portland metropolitan area covers both sides of the Columbia River and Willamette River. In this broad area there were numerous tribes, peoples, and villages that honored the abundance that the lands offered. We honor their history and acknowledge their sacrifices. In the Portland metropolitan area the tribes are the Multnomah (a band of the Chinook), Wasco, Cowlitz, Klamath, Clackamas, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia and Willamette River. Let us also acknowledge the robust present day federally recognized tribes of this area which are the Grand Ronde, Siletz, and Cowlitz. The urban Native community is made up of tribal diversity that originates from around the country representing at least 380 tribes with more than 100 tribes represented among Portland Public Schools.
Franklin STRONG,
Chris Frazier

School Meal Payments and Account Balances
The PPS Nutrition Services team has been so excited to see so many students enjoying school meals this year. To help communicate meal account balances to families, the Nutrition Services department will start sending notifications and friendly reminders to families whose student’s meal account no longer has funds on it to purchase school meals. Remember, families may apply for free or reduced price meals at any time throughout the school year and must apply every year to maintain eligibility. All families can check their account balances online with SchoolCafe at any time (and there is no charge to view your accounts).
Families have the following options to pay for school meals:
Pay as you go: Bring cash or check (payable to Portland Public Schools) directly to the cafeteria*
Prepay for meals with cash or check (payable to Portland Public Schools) in the cafeteria*. Funds will be deposited into the student meal account. Purchases will be deducted from the account balance.
Pay with a debit/credit card using SchoolCafe, a secure online meal payment system. NOTE: There is a minimum payment of $15 and a 5% fee per online transaction.
*Payments can be dropped off at the school office. Please put the payment in an envelope labeled 'cafeteria'.
Checks can also be mailed to PPS Nutrition Services, 501 N Dixon St, Portland, OR 97227.
