#YouCantStopExcellence - Volume 2.9 - October 10 , 2021
A Message from the Principal
I hope that everyone had a great Homecoming Week!
Now, back to reality! The first quarter of the school year end this week and I challenge you to finish #MustangSTRONG.
Congratulations to Mustang Volleyball who is undefeated this season, as well as Girls Mustang Golf who is 8-1! Way to go Girls Mustang Cross Country who placed 3rd out of 24 teams and Boys Mustang Cross Country who placed 13th out of 25 teams at the Land o’ Lakes HS Invitational!
Best wishes to our FBLA students at their competition this weekend, as well as the Marching Mustangs! We are so proud of you!
September and October is Hispanic Heritage Month. During RANCH we are viewing different videos that celebrate the Hispanic culture and the contribution of Hispanic Americans to our great nation!
October is also Mental Health Awareness Month and we will be viewing different videos in RANCH regarding mental health and what students need to do if they need assistance.
Our JWMHS Gallup is available for our students now. We will be reviewing how to complete the Gallup and why we take the Gallup each year. Thank you for your participation as it will assist us with making decisions at our school.
If you have an eSchool placeholder, on campus or off campus, please sign up for your classes as soon as possible. Directions can be found on our website. All students must have SIX (6) classes in order to be considered a full-time student.
For those 11th and 12th graders who have not met graduation requirements for Reading or Algebra 1, we will be holding the in-school SAT on Wednesday, October 13th. See your counselor for more information.
Freshmen! Please make sure that you order your FREE MustangU Class of 2025 t-shirt by visiting this link: https://accounthub.imagedepotexpress.com/jwm_freshman_u_tees/shop/home. Enter your code: jwfresh21 to get your shirt and it will be delivered directly to the school.
Please make sure that you can pass the Covid-19 screener (Student Covid-19 Screener) each morning that is found on our website. If you cannot, please stay home. If you are positive for Covid-19 or have been exposed to someone who is positive for Covid-19, please stay home and contact your administrator so that we can help you with your school work.
The best way to be successful at JWMHS is to listen to the things we say and read the information that we put out. We communicate in a variety of ways and ask that you make sure that you are paying attention and following us on social media.
We want to remind you that you need to respect each other and just be nice. Calling each other names, posting negative things online, and acting inappropriately towards each other is uncalled for and unnecessary. Again, just be nice. And if you can’t find something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.
Parents, allegedly the next TikTok Challenge is a Slap a Staff Member in the Backside Month. I highly recommend that students not participate in this as this is considered battery and a felony. Please speak with your child about behaving appropriately.
You can expect weekly newsletters to keep you up to date as to what is happening at JWMHS around the ranch, as well as a weekly School Messenger call on Sunday night around 6:30PM. A good way of staying up to date on school information is to visit our website at https://jwmhs.pasco.k12.fl.us/ and follow us on Twitter and Instagram (both @JWMHS), as well as like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jwmitchellhighschool! From there you can find several sources of information that will keep you informed of all the happenings at JW Mitchell High School.
We will strive to provide the best education possible for your child. If at any time during the school year you feel the need to contact me, please email me at jschultz@pasco.k12.fl.us or call (727) 774-9202.
We hope that you have a great week! Go Mustangs!

Student Attendance Guidelines
School attendance and active participation in class are extremely important to learning and success and making good grades. Each teacher shall establish a set policy for make-up work and a grading system and shall submit a written description of his/her grading system to the principal and students at the beginning of the course.
Students need to arrive on time and stay through dismissal so they will receive important directions, class instruction and avoid disrupting other students. Parents can set a good example by encouraging students to follow the school’s time schedule. (Code of Conduct of Pasco County Schools)
Students who come to campus late or need to leave campus early MUST provide parental permission.
Procedure for checking IN to school
- Students should report to Student Services upon arriving at school.
- Students should provide documentation for excuse of tardiness. Determination of the type of absence will be done by the Attendance Secretary.
- An excused/unexcused tardy pass will be issued by Student Services.
- Student should give pass to teacher when they get to the classroom.
Procedures for checking OUT of school
- No students will be dismissed after 2:15pm.
- Students are checked out at Student Services. ID must be shown when checking out a student.
- Students who drive themselves MUST provide parental permission in the form of a note with a contact phone number to the Attendance Secretary no later than 11:00AM.
- A check out pass will be issued by the Attendance Secretary with the time and date of early release.
- Students should present this pass to their teachers at the time of release.
It is the belief of the District School Board of Pasco County that academic success requires continuity of instruction and active classroom participation. Attendance shall be required of all students enrolled in the schools during the days and hours that the school is in session. School attendance shall be the responsibility of parents and students.(Code of Conduct of Pasco County Schools)
The following are acceptable reasons for a student’s absences from class:
- Illness of student
- Major illness in the immediate family of the student (immediate family is determined as parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, legal guardians or persons “in loco parentis,” or a member of one’s own household.)
- Death in the immediate family of the student.
- Religious holiday of the student’s faith (including Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, Epiphany, etc.)
- Religious instruction (including Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Confirmation, etc.)

- Absences for trips or other parental requests. Requests must be approved at least one (1) week in advance.
- In-school or out-of-school suspension.
- Subpoena or forced absence by any law enforcement agency. A copy of the subpoena or court summons must be submitted to the school.
- Issues and occasions specific to military families.
For purposes of attendance, school related activities and testing will not be counted as absences from school.
All students who are absent will be marked “unexcused” (U) until the parent/guardian notifies the school in writing or through the website and justifies the absence with one of the acceptable reasons as defined in Section 2. Parents should notify the school of a student’s absence and the reason for the absence with the appropriate note within three (3) school days of a student’s return to school. The form to report an excused absence can be found at http://jwmhs.pasco.k12.fl.us/mform/view.php?id=12087. Types of appropriate notes include parent notes, doctor notes or court paperwork.
Students may make up any and all assignments, tests or related work assigned on the day(s) of any excused or unexcused absence at full credit. The student is responsible for asking the teacher(s) for make-up tests, assignments and related work. Students will be given a minimum of two (2) calendar days per day or period of absence to make up all tests, assignments and related work. Students may be given additional time as stipulated on their IEP or based on teacher discretion. Work due to be turned in on the day of the absence will be turned in upon return and be given full credit. Students who have been assigned out-of-school suspension (OSS) may make up all tests, assignments and related work for full credit. (Code of Conduct of Pasco County Schools)
At the secondary level, attendance is marked per period. If a student has five unexcused absences, or absences for which the reasons are unknown, in any one course within a calendar month or ten unexcused absences or absences for which the reasons are unknown, in any one course within a semester, the student may lose privileges as follows:
They may be excluded from attendance reward incentives as defined at the school level.

•Lose of privilege to drive to campus until the end of the following grading quarter. Absences accumulated in the fourth quarter will result in loss of privileges during said grading quarter only and will not carry over to the following year.
