1ST GR LIT: UNIT 1, WEEKS 1-3

Unit 1: Week 1
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand realistic fiction
- I can use text evidence to respond to realistic fiction.
- I know about things we do at school.
Key Concepts:
- Our class will be focusing on what children do at school. We will also be talking about rules and why we need them.
- Help your child use the words to make up a question and an answer about school.
- Help your child identify and generate words that rhyme with their spelling words. This week’s phonic sound is the short a sound, as in cat, man, and rag.
Comprehension: Character (click on the link to access the reading)
- Read the sentences about a girl and her pet. Help your child identify what the characters do, what they say, and how they feel.
Unit 1: Week 2
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a fantasy story.
- I can use text evidence to respond to a fantasy story.
- I know about different places people live.
Key Concepts:
- We will be focusing on what it’s like where people live. We will be talking about how we describe our environment, including our homes and neighborhoods and the people who live in them.
Words to Know: down, up, out, very
- Help your child use the words to tell about what he or she sees outside a window from your home.
Spelling/Phonics: short i
- You will spell a word and your child will say it. Then your child will use the words to draw and label pictures. This week’s phonics skill is short i, as in sit, win, and pill.

- Help your child read a story and talk about what the characters say, how they act, and what they think.
Unit 1: Week 3
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a fantasy story.
- I can respond to a fantasy story by extending the story.
- I know about pets and what makes them special.
Key Concepts:
- Our class will be focusing on what makes pets so special. We will talk about living things and their basic needs.
- Help your child use the words to tell a story about a special pet he or she would like.
- Help your child sort words with the l-blend. Help him or her write the spelling words and sort by beginning blends. This week’s phonics skill is consonant l-blends in words such as black, clap, flag, play, and slip. Then help your child add more words to each column.

- Try this activity to help your child read a story and think about who the characters are, where they are, and what happens in the story.
