The Invention of the Clock
Description of the Mechanical Clock in the Renaissance
The later Mechanical Clocks worked using gears. They have two main parts: the mainspring and a pendulum. Mechanical Clocks are wound with a key, which tightens the mainspring. As the mainspring unwound, it turned gears which cause the hands to move. The pendulum keeps time and makes sure that the gears move at the right pace. Instead of a mainspring, some mechanical clocks had weights that pull the gears at the right pace. The energy created by the springs and weights made the Mechanical Clock work.
How the Mechanical Clock has Changed & It's Purpose
The Mechanical Clock started out very simplistic. It didn't have a face or hands and it just chimed every hour. It changed and added facing and hands as well as either a mainspring, gears, and a pendulum or weights and gears. As the Mechanical Clock change, it got more and more accurate. The purpose of the mechanical clock hasn't changed. It's always been to tell time.
