Annual Notices
Child Find
Child Find is an active process for identifying students suspected of having a disability. The first step requires providing information to the public regarding the availability of special education services.
These notices must be posted annually to ensure all districts continue their efforts to seek out children and students who may need special education and related services.
When a parent, educator, doctor, other individual suspects a child may have a disability, a request for a special education evaluation can be made to the student’s teacher, counselor, administrator or Special Services Office.
Parents can request an initial evaluation of a student suspected of having a disability, and before any formal evaluations take place, the district will provide written notice and, when necessary shall request written consent to evaluate.
The district will provide information about your family rights and procedural safeguards. Upon receipt of signed consent, a district may evaluate the student and determine if there is a need for special education and related services. Child Find evaluations are conducted at no cost to the parents.
Directory Information
In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Fenton Area Public Schools may disclose “Directory Information” from the educational records of a student. Directory information is designated by the district as:
- name of student
- date and place of birth
- grade level
- address (electronic & home)
- field of study
- telephone number (under appropriate circumstances)
- most recent educational agency or institution attended
- participation in officially recognized activities and sports
- weight and height of members of athletic teams
- dates of attendance
- degrees, honors, and awards received
- photographic, film or video images created by the district in conjunction with school-sponsored activities and awards, or in an educational or extracurricular setting taken as part of the school’s newsletter, newspaper, and/or website.
The district may disclose any of the items listed without prior written consent unless the Principal is notified to the contrary in writing by October 1, 2023.
The District Administration Office shall maintain a list of student names wherein disclosure has been refused. These lists shall be reviewed and students must be excluded from directory information disclosures. The district reserves the right to disclose directory information of former students without giving prior public notice.
Personal Curriculum Notice
A school may not issue a diploma to a student unless the student earns credit for all courses in the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC).
A school may choose to modify the MMC for a student after developing a personal curriculum based on the student’s individual learning needs.
A personal curriculum may be developed for a student for any of the following reasons:
- To modify the math requirements
- To modify the credit requirements because the student has transferred from out of state or from a non-public school
- A student wishes to go beyond the academic requirements by adding more credits in math, science, English or Languages other than English
- A student with a disability needs to modify the credit requirements based on his/her disability
- To substitute one Career and Technical Education (CTE) credit for one credit of social studies, health and physical education or a visual, performing or applied art
Once the personal curriculum has been developed, it must be approved by the Principal to be implemented. Please contact your child’s counselor for more information.
Pesticide Notice
Pest management techniques emphasize pest exclusion and biological controls. However, as with most pest control programs, pesticides are occasionally applied. You have the right to be informed prior to any application of an insecticide, fungicide, or herbicide made to the school grounds or buildings during the school year.
In certain emergencies, such as an infestation of stinging insects, pesticides may be applied without prior notice to prevent injury to students, but you will be notified following any application.
If you would like prior notification, please contact Mr. Joe Humpert, Operations Department, 3200 Donaldson Drive, Fenton, MI 48430 with the following information:
