2023-2024 School Year
October 6, 2023
Greetings,
On the brink of a long weekend, I hope this outreach finds everyone well. Our students have continued to work hard in and outside of the classrooms. Over the course of the last several days, we have been evaluating how well our lunch routine has been going. We are happy to report that our students have adjusted nicely to routine, proper behavior, and lunchroom etiquette. Because of how well things have been going, we have decided that our students are ready for an outdoor eating option. This week we have allowed one grade level during each lunch period the choice of sitting outdoors to eat. Many students have chosen this option and some have not which is perfectly fine. Those students who prefer to eat indoors are allowed to. Below are some pictures of some happy students who chose to eat outdoors!
Each week there is a section that can be found below that is filled with important upcoming dates. I will update this section each week as appropriate and as we get closer to the end of the month I will start to add November dates. I have already added one key event for November, picture retakes. They are on November 7th! You will also find that many of the dates match the flyers that are displayed throughout this newsletter!
I do want to highlight Maynard High School's middle school open house which is taking place next week. It will be an evening filled with lots of information about what MHS offers to our students. It is promised to be a valuable event for both students and parents. Students don't have to be in grade 8 to attend. All middle school-age levels are welcome! Please see the flyer below for more information.
Additionally, I wanted to thank everyone for the continued warm welcome to Maynard. I had the opportunity to spend this past Saturday at Maynard Fest where I was part of our school team volunteering at our Maynard School's booth. So many students and families stopped in to say hello and took the time to chat. In simple terms: I loved it! Thanks for sharing part of your Saturday with me and for visiting our booth.
Lastly, MCAS results are going in the mail today. Please be on the lookout for them. When they arrive please keep in mind that MCAS is a mini snapshot of such a small portion of your child.
Also, please remember that these scores don't measure character, grit, personality, compassion, or many other things that are vital life skills. They are a number that provides an opportunity for schools and parents to get a different sense of where each child can benefit from targeted instruction. Our students are humans and not robots and they all have complicated needs and each one is different. We are always here if you want to chat about specifics regarding what your child's results are.
I hope you enjoy the weekend. Thanks, as always, for your partnership!

Snack and Food Suggestions
Fowler school classrooms provide time for snacks each day. Studies show that the adolescent brain benefits from food and water throughout the day.
Bringing in snacks is optional, and not required. Please note that teachers are not permitted to provide food to students. If you would like your child to have a snack, please send it in with them. Please note, that all students are responsible for cleaning up after their own snack. This is especially important due to the risks of food allergies.
Please take some time over the next few days to pick up appropriate items for snacks. You can use the following list of suggestions to help you pick out snacks:
Healthy snacks (especially those with protein!) are encouraged
All snacks must be "individual" – there is absolutely NO sharing
Snacks should be able to be eaten in approximately 5 minutes
Snacks should be easily contained and cleaned up
All snacks should be cleared for personal allergens.
We strongly encourage that all snacks be nut and peanut-free
Water only- no sodas, caffeinated drinks, or “sports” beverages (Gatorade, etc.)
Examples of healthy snack items: cheese sticks, whole fruits, carrots and hummus, granola bars (without nuts), dried fruit, vegetable sticks, whole wheat crackers, etc.
Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you have any questions. We look forward to a great beginning to the year!

Curriculum News
Mr. Fedore is looking for donations for our Makerspace classroom. Many of these needed things are general items that can typically be found around the home and are mostly items that you would recycle on a weekly basis. We are currently also looking to increase our general hand tool supply. If you have extra, we will take them.
1. Clean empty soda bottles
2. Clean paper towel tubes (not toilet paper)
3. Newspapers (clean)
4. Legos- if you have some and they are not being used, we will take them!
5. Basic hand tools (hammers, small hand saws, pliers, screwdrivers (+ and -), tape measures
6. Scrap wood (contractors who have scraps of clean wood) we want the scrap! (no plywood please)
7. Clean (unused) scrap pipe (PVC is the most needed)

OLD NEWS
COVID PROTOCOL REMINDER
Our school nurses would like all families to review our Covid-19 and other illness school protocols. While school attendance is an important factor in student success, students who are ill need to stay home until they are well enough to learn, and they are no longer contagious.
Per the Massachusetts Departments of Education and Public Health, students who feel well are able to attend school, even if they have been exposed to Covid-19. If a student becomes ill with Covid symptoms at school, the nurse will send the student home for home testing, as we cannot test at school. If a student becomes ill with Covid symptoms at home, a home test should be done. Students who test positive need to isolate for five days. The full guidelines for isolation and masking when a student tests positive for Covid-19 are here.
Our school nurses also ask that families follow our illness protocols:
Students receiving antibiotics for a contagious condition such as strep throat or bacterial conjunctivitis must stay out of school until 24 hours of antibiotic therapy have been completed. Vomiting, diarrhea, excessive coughing, heavy nasal discharge and generally not feeling well are additional indications that the child should remain home. Students may return to school 24 hours after vomiting and/or diarrhea have subsided.
If your child has a temperature of 100 degrees or above (taken orally) in the morning, your child must remain home. Students should remain home for 24 hours after a fever has subsided without the use of fever-reducing medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). If your child develops a fever during school hours, they will not be allowed to return to the classroom and will remain in the health office until dismissed to a parent/guardian or their designee.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and for helping us keep our buildings healthy!
Drop Off and Pick Up Procedure Reminder
Drop off and Pick up Procedures - UPDATE PLEASE READ!!
Safety is our #1 priority! We all care about our kiddos!!
Firstly, let us thank you for your patience and attention to the procedures. It is not lost on us that this is annoying and can affect your own schedules. I assure you that all districts deal with this, as do we as parents in those districts. It appears that we are getting more efficient with our routine but we are tweaking the pick-up portion of the day so please stay with us here. We will break down both bookends of the day here:
Drop Off:
Staff will not be outside until 7:45 each day, please do not alter or circumvent the procedure while waiting.
Please follow the direction of staff on hand at all times as there may be situations you cannot see from your vehicle that they are accounting for
Please pull up as far as you can before letting out to alleviate the congestion on Tiger - this sort of happens in waves so if you are back at the cones, pull all the way up when those that let out already are leaving
Please, please, please do not at this time of day go around other cars in front of you. This is extremely dangerous for kiddos getting out of cars. As we know they are unpredictable. One thousand occurrences may yield no incidents, but that one thousand and one time…you get it. Below I will describe how in the afternoon we can safely adjust this practice.
Pick Up
Again, Please pull up as far as you can to alleviate congestion.
When directed by a staff member, if your kiddo(s) are in your car and other cars in front of you are still waiting, you may pull WIDE to the right with the staff member’s direction to avoid any other cars. You will then exit out the far opening near the fields. We know that some students come out more quickly than others. PLEASE do not do this unless directed by a staff member as our coverage, although we are doing our best, may vary from day to day.
Lastly, we have athletes heading to the fields right after school. We are going to direct them to wait until 2:35, but again, the unpredictability comes into play. Please watch out for students crossing the parking lot.
Thank you, thank you for your attention and care to these procedures. Safety is our number one concern. We can all do our part to ensure Fowler students are looked after.
