September: Respect
It has been a busy month!!
In September, our character trait of the month is RESPECT. Kicking off the month, we had an assembly September 1st to talk about the Valley View Values and about what it means to be respectful to others. Each class brainstormed ways to show respect in different areas of our building. Below is a summary that we made into a poster for the whole school to see!
I hope you've found some of the resources I have sent home helpful and know that I am here to help your child in whatever way I can to be successful in social, emotional and academic areas.
Thank you for letting me spend time with your children! ~ Mrs. Paz

EMOTIONAL REGULATION
All emotions are normal. All emotions are real for that person. However, our brains do think clearer once we can calm our brains. Although "take deep breaths" may seem cliche', there are physiological reasons why this works. I've been sharing different breathing techniques to Valley View students so hopefully in the "high emotion" moment, they will remember what we've practiced! The Zones of Regulation is one way in which we help students identify their feelings, what zone they are in, and teach them ways to get back to the green zone, (what my dad would call, "talking rationally")!
MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT: Hearing Impairments
In September, a whole school read aloud video was sent to teachers of a book called Here to Bump, Bump to Hear by Jane Biehl, PhD. This book describes how a service dog, Sita, is trained to become a hearing dog to assist Jane, a young girl with hearing loss. Sita was trained to bump Jane when she heard certain noises to warn Jane. Even though Jane had a disability, she just needed some help.
