WEEK OF 10/01/23
Principal Ponderings
Good Evening Blackhawks,
I just returned from northern Vermont where I enjoyed some hiking, cribbage, cornhole, good company, and the most beautiful wedding! The wedding took place in a gorgeous setting, surrounded by cornfields, grapes, and hillsides filled with fall foliage (yes it really is coming!) But what really made it special extended beyond the aesthetic. The couple's strong sense of who they are both individually and as a couple, their commitment to supporting each other's interests and passions, and a shared sense of inclusivity and fun was palpable in every detail. So much of this comes from their families and surrounding community. I also like to think some part comes from PES. The groom grew up here and attended PES and Lebanon High School before heading to Montreal where he attended McGill. He is now at UVM Medical School.
This weekend is one of many times I've been reminded that a K to 8 education extends well beyond reading and math performance. Here at Plainfield School, the teachers and staff care deeply about nurturing individuality, interests, and students' capacity to connect with others. As we wrap up our NWEA testing over the next few days, we are looking forward to many more opportunities to nurture the whole child in each and every one of our students. The sections below highlight upcoming programming as well as some pictures from our recent Trail Day hikes. We had so many parents attend and it was a really great day of laughter, discovery, challenge, and reflection. I am also including some pictures from today's PTA 5K. By all accounts it was another successful event for the PTA. Thank you to all the parents who attended one or both of these events. You are continuing a long-standing tradition of supporting connection, adventure, fun and self-discovery for Plainfield children! (NOTE: Mrs. Jewell in the office is working on posting lots more wonderful photos to the website this coming week!)
Looking forward to seeing you in the morning.
Best,
Audra Bucklin, Principal

Substitute Teachers Needed for 2023-2024 school year
The Plainfield School is seeking individuals who would be comfortable working with K-8th grade students in our building during the 2023-2024 school year. Applicants must be able to follow teacher substitute plans, be dependable, and enjoy working with children. If you are interested in applying, please contact Katie Lowery in the office at (603) 469-3250.
From the Nurse
Please review this brief summary of the most up-to-date CDC Covid protocols. PES follows the NH DHHS guidance which is currently one and the same as the CDC guidance. There are a lot of viruses going around right now. While Covid numbers have been low here at PES so far, please be reminded you must still test when symptoms are present A positive Covid test requires 5 days quarantine and 5 days of additional masking. Let’s work together to keep our numbers low and our attendance (for both staff and students) strong by preventing the spread of Covid to the extent possible. We have covid tests available in the office and nurse’s office.

CLASSROOM NEWS - 2ND GRADE (from Mrs. Ellis)
Sunflowers!!
Second Grade has been busy learning all about the PES garden. We have taken a specific interest in the mammoth sunflowers that are growing! Second grade read a few books that taught us about the special pattern that sunflowers make, drew portraits of our very own sunflowers and did some sunflower math! We hope to continue our sunflower learning by letting our sunflowers dry and roasting sunflower seeds! We will see if it works for us. Second grade will finish up the garden season by closing out the school gardens and prepping the beds for winter!
STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM NEWS
What do we do with all that NWEA data anyway?
- Classroom instructional strategies and needs
- WIN/Academic Block interventions and learning opportunities that match student learning needs
- Requesting further consultation from the Student Support Team (SST)
Teachers may be encouraged to consult further with our Student Support Team (SST) if classroom and/or NWEA data - together with teacher observations - indicates a student is not making expected progress. Upon consultation, SST Members:
- Consider additional assessments/data needed to better understand why the student is struggling
- Develop a 4 to 6 week intervention plan with a specialist
- Notify parent/guardian of the intervention plan and invite them in for follow up meeting in 4 to 6 weeks.
- If the student is still not progressing, Special Education Evaluation Referral to our Student Services Coordinator to determine the need for further evaluation.
For more information about how we use data to support a multi tiered system of supports (MTSS) here at PES, please reference pages 17 to 19 in the 23-24 Parent Student Handbook.
