Inspiring Excellence
Casa Grande Union High School District | January 2024
Happy New Year!
I want to thank all the students and their sponsors who participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 15. Students from all three of our schools participated in this community event. This event focuses on unity and giving back to our community.
As we move into the second semester, you will see efforts to increase student attendance. As we reviewed the grades for the first semester, we determined a strong correlation between student absences and student grades. There is a very high failure rate for students who miss more than ten class periods in a semester. This is the cold and flu season, and we are seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases across our state. The expectation is for students to stay home when they have flu and COVID-19 symptoms. It is essential that parents/guardians communicate with the school when their child is out so we can excuse the absences. Students are encouraged to meet their teachers when they return to complete all their work so their grades are not impacted.
Have a wonderful winter season. Stay safe and warm.
Jeff Lavender

CTE Students of the Month
Career & Technical Education (CTE)
Over 1,600 students are enrolled in thirteen (13) Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs throughout the Casa Grande Union High School District (CGUHSD). Each month, a different CTE program nominates a deserving student for this honor.
Jaylea Hernandez [CGUHS] Early Childhood Education
(CGUHS) Jaylea Hernandez was recognized Tuesday, January 9, as the Career & Technical Education (CTE) Student of the Month at the district’s Governing Board meeting. Jaylea was nominated by her CTE Early Childhood Education Teacher Mrs. Dixie Harvey. “Jaylea is a unique student. She is a quiet leader who takes initiative and makes sure everything is taken care of with the other high school students and for the preschool staff and children. Jaylea is accountable and consistent with her school attendance and the tasks and assignments she needs to complete. She is always on time and often shows up to just help out with a child or two who is having a rough time. Jaylea is a good teacher and cheerfully supports and helps the new high school students in the preschool to learn their responsibilities and how to perform them. I mentioned that she is quiet because she never expects praise. She does the right things for the right reasons. Jaylea is a role model to everyone she meets. She is highly deserving of this award.” Jaylea’s parents are Mr. & Mrs. Johnny Apodaca of Casa Grande, Arizona.

Also, her involvement in outside-of-school activities demonstrates a deep sense of social responsibility and empathy for others. Her achievements inspire us all, reminding us that with dedication and hard work, we can reach new heights. Indeed, Reanne's achievements are not only a reflection of her hard work and determination but also a testament to her potential for a bright and impactful future. Scholarship Opportunities
It is a known fact college is expensive and the cost is rising. Do not let that deter you from applying for college. There are many opportunities to help you cover the cost of college. Scholarships are gifts of "free money" that do not need to be paid back, unlike student loans. Most scholarships can be awarded based on merit, which means that students earn them for having good grades, athletic talent, volunteering, or even for a certain demographic. Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars are awarded in scholarship money. There are many sources of scholarship, such as colleges and universities, military, individuals, communities, nonprofits, ethnic/historical organizations, businesses, religious groups, and more. Some scholarships are highly selective but many are not. The best practice is to apply for as many scholarships as possible and start early.
