Outdoor Masking Update
As of December 6, outdoor masking is strongly recommended, but no longer required on junior high school campuses. LASD will continue to follow all current and future changes to state and local public health guidelines.

TK-5th Grade Math Adoption Update
After a two-year process involving parents, teachers and staff, LASD formally adopted a new math curriculum last spring. The curriculum is being implemented in all TK-5 classrooms this year. Teachers have been trained and are receiving ongoing training and coaching support. LASD is also partnering with the Silicon Valley Math Initiative for a series of teacher coaching cycles for all junior high school math classes to build shared instructional strategies at all grade levels.
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Sandra McGonagle explained the difference between the new LASD curriculum and recent news media coverage of mathematics instruction across the State of California. She explained that LASD will not be "detracking" students, but will keep its math pathways to ensure all students receive a rigorous mathematics education and are able to access math coursework beyond their current grade level. The chart below depicts the LASD math pathways, which will be maintained with the new curriculum adoption. She also clarified that LASD will not teach social justice through the mathematics curriculum.

LASD Budget: 1st Interim Report
The Board reviewed the 1st interim budget report for the 2021-22 school year. The report reflects the actual revenue and expenditures through October 31, 2021 and shows a "positive certification," meaning LASD can meet its financial obligations for the current and next two years. A variety of positive economic factors have contributed to a robust reserve balance to keep LASD financially strong. Assuming current positive economic factors continue into the future, LASD will be financially sound in the next two years, as well as in the next six years.
Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, Randy Kenyon also shared financial scenarios related to changes that could occur in the next couple of years. These scenarios included taking over the financial responsibility of funding technology for staff, rather than receiving funds from school PTA fundraising. In addition, he discussed the Santa Clara County Board of Education's Notice to Bullis Charter School, which indicated the county may decide not to renew the BCS charter in two years because the charter is out of compliance with the law due to a lack of diversity in the school's student enrollment. This could dramatically alter student enrollment in our LASD schools.
