Information About Report Cards
A discussion with your child about grades can be an effective conversation starter that leads to a broader discussion about school in general. Allowing your child the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings not just about academics but also about social issues and their teachers is just as important as a conversation about grades. Families can use these tips to talk to kids about grades in a positive and effective way.
Take Time One on One
Select a quiet time and place to have a conversation with your child and give ample time and your full attention, without interruptions. Choose a place to talk that is free from the distraction of electronics and other people in the house. It helps to make a “statement of intent” prior to the conversation so your child can prepare.
Start Positive
Reviewing grades is a chance to give credit where your child is excelling. Highlight their strengths with a positive opening statement like "I see you're doing really well in spelling. That's great!" to help build motivation. Assure your child that there is time for improvement and that you are here to help come up with a plan for success.
Read The Teacher Comments (Not Just The Grade)
In many cases, comments written by the teacher can be more helpful than the actual grade. These comments give you a better idea of the specific areas your child is struggling with (or excelling in) as well as how your child is performing overall.
Focus on Effort
Combined with grades and teachers’ notes, effort marks help you understand your child’s attitude toward learning. Giving credit and encouragement for effort is especially important for kids who have trouble academically. If your child is trying their best and feels their efforts are seen, they'll be more enthusiastic and resilient learners.
Make a Plan
During the discussion, you and your child might have identified areas that need attention. Set learning goals and identify actionable steps to address concerns or progress toward achieving them. To keep on top of the plan, set aside time each week to check in on your child’s progress. Talk about what your child learned in class, what assignment they are working on, and any new things that require help.
Outline Solutions
Encourage your child to share their thoughts and worries. Kids who are struggling the most in school often have a lot to say. Address challenges that come up in the discussion and outline possible solutions as a team.
Book A Parent-Teacher Conference
If less-than-stellar grades have you worried, book a meeting to talk with your child’s teacher. The teacher has spent hours a day observing and working with your child in the classroom. Often, he or she can paint a better picture of where your child may be struggling as well as suggest ways to focus on improvement.

CogAT testing in 3rd and 5th Grades
This year, the Howard County Public School System will be administering the Cognitive
Abilities Test (CogAT) to all students in grades 3 and 5. The CogAT is a group-administered
abilities test that measures students’ reasoning abilities, which they develop through in-school and out-of-school experiences. It is not designed to test a student’s academic achievement, but their potential.
All students in Grades 3 and 5 will participate in the testing. The CogAT will be administered
on December 5, 6, and 7th. No special preparation is required. Just send your child to school ready to learn as you do daily.
The Gifted and Talented Education Program will use the data from the CogAT as one criterion
for placement into fourth grade Gifted/Talented mathematics classes and middle school
Gifted/Talented content classes. Students’ individual scores will be reported to parents in late
February/early March.
Education Support Professionals Day
Holiday Shop
12/5-12/9 4 pm-7 pm in the CCES Music Room
Calling all parent volunteers! This year PTA will be hosting a Holiday Shop! This a wonderful opportunity for kids (CCES students & their siblings) to shop for the holiday that's special to their family and choose gifts for their family, friends, and other loved ones. The Shop will run after school, the week commencing December 5th. Gifts will range in price from $0.50-$10, with the vast majority of gifts costing less than $5.
We need plenty of parent helpers to help set up, assist students in shopping, manage cash sales and do a quick pack-up each evening to keep the music room functioning normally during the school day. This event will be hugely popular and loads of fun - please lend a hand! Thank you! Click here to sign up as a helper https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D4AAEAD29ABFE3-cces1
INFORMATION WORTH REPEATING
NEXT WEEK IS American Education Week 2022
Together for Safe, Just & Equitable Schools. #aew2022
What is American Education Week?
During American Education Week, November 14—28, 2022, Americans nationwide will join the National Education Association (NEA) in raising awareness about the need to provide every child with a quality public education. The celebration highlights the importance of bringing together educators, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools. It also reflects NEA's vision of calling upon America to provide public school students with quality schools so that they can grow and achieve in the 21st century.
Invitation to Visit Your Child's Class on November 14
As part of the celebration, we provide parents and guardians the opportunity to visit their child’s classroom. Monday, November 14 is designated as the visitation day. If you cannot make it to visit on Monday, November 14, you are welcome to visit your child's classroom any day during the week, but please contact the teacher ahead of time. Please refer to the CCES Master Schedule below to help you guide your visitation.
What to Expect When You Arrive
When you visit, please be prepared to sign in through the Lobby Guard kiosk in the office. You will need your driver's license to sign in with Lobby Guard. You also need to complete the volunteer and visitation training and show the certificate when you arrive. We do not allow younger children in the classrooms when parents visit. Additionally, we ask visitors to refrain from using their phones in the classroom. Please put your phone on silence or vibrate. If you need to use your phone or device for any reason, please go to the front lobby or outside the building.
We look forward to our continued partnership in your child's education, and we are excited to see you in school during American Education Week.

National PTA Reflections Creative Arts Recognition Program
The National PTA Reflections Arts Recognition Program is a program designed to inspire and celebrate your kid’s creativity. To participate, students create a piece of art in any of 6 different categories that reflect this year’s theme, “Show Your Voice!” Every student who enters receives a certificate celebrating their work! Each artwork is evaluated on an interpretation of the theme, creativity, and artistic merit. Reflections is not just for “artsy” kids- it’s for EVERY kid!
HOW TO ENTER: Reflect on the theme “Show Your Voice!” and create an original work in one (or more!) of the following categories (click on the hyperlinks for more information about each):
Fill out an Entry Form, and be sure to include your Artist’s Statement, which is how you feel that your artwork connects to the theme (this is 50% of your score from the judges).
Turn in your artwork and entry form to the office at Clemens Crossing by Tuesday, November 29, 2022! OR, if your submission is electronic, please email it to me: reflections@clemenscrossingpta.org.
Artwork will be judged in 3 categories:
Primary (Grades K-2)
Intermediate (Grades 3-5), and
Special Artist (for students with challenges as covered in the ADA).
Entries will be reviewed by experienced arts and education judges. All participants will be celebrated with certificates of participation, the top three entries will receive ribbons and the first-place entry will receive a medal. The top three entries in each category will move on to the Howard County Reflections Contest; the top three County entries will move on to the Free State Reflections Contest, and State winners in each category will compete in the National PTA Reflections Contest.
EVERY artwork will be celebrated!
