The Starburst
The Barrows Weekly Newsletter: October 21, 2022
A Message from Principal Gallegos
Greetings, Barrows Families!
The photos in this week's Starburst are the best way to experience our week (Thank you to Ms. Saenko for capturing some more pictures for me after my phone died)! Unique things that happened this week were: learning why we celebrate Indigenous People's Day in October during our all-school assembly, second graders learned from one of our very own Barrows Parent, why sleep is so important to everyone, especially growing children, teachers engaged in professional development, staff spend an afternoon analyzing our MCAS data, kindergarteners participated in KidsFun, and to top it all of we ended with a beautiful afternoon with the Monster Mash! Thank you to our Monster Mash Committee and the families that donated and purchased tickets to make this our biggest PTO fundraiser!
Big things to note this week:
- Nurse Rose shares what the second graders learned about great sleep habits
- A request from Mrs. Atwood & Mrs. Hurley
"Thank you for following our Instagram pages, highlighting the learning and fun in Art and PE. If your Instagram name does not readily identify who you are - please send us a follow-up email, so we know who it is. We want to make sure we're only accepting safe people. Mrs. Hurley for Art is found here at @mrs.hurley_art, and Mrs. Atwood for Physical Education is here at @barrowspe."
- Important dates for PTO, METCO, & SEPAC (and fundraiser deadlines)
- Please be sure to fill out the form acknowledging our district and school handbook
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Gallegos
A Good Nights Sleep
Dear Families,
I had the opportunity to listen to a parent speak to 2nd grade about the importance of a good night's sleep!
Here are some important points she made:
- Sleep is vital
- Children need at least 10-11 hours of sleep per night.
- Set up a sleep routine and try to stick to it, our bodies like routines.
- There should be as little light as possible in the room, but if a night light is needed, there is a special light bulb called an amber night light that will not affect sleep.
- Blue light is scientifically known to inhibit sleep , there should be no blue light (computers, cell phones, etc) at all , in the bedroom!
- Because of the effects of blue light and stimulation on the brain, electronics should not be used 1-2 hours before going to bed. Low key, calming and soothing wind-down activities are best.
- Going into a bed that has been made, and a room that is not too disorganized, has shown to help the brain settle for the night.
- Still having trouble falling and staying asleep?....try white noise.
- We all feel better and perform better when we get a good night's sleep!

Barrows & RPS Handbook- Please sign!
Each year, we want to make sure that our families are aware of the school and district expectations. These are reviewed annually by principals and members of the leadership teams. Parents/guardians are asked to review this school guide which is a summary of our school’s common procedures, practices, and guidelines. These are found on the school website. We encourage parents to share this information with their child. In addition to the specific school guides, we have a Reading Public School District Handbook which outlines all the policies that our students and families are asked to abide by when participating in RPS events, including the school day. We ask all parents/guardians to review the handbook yearly and sign-off indicating that you are aware of the policies. The Reading Public School Handbook can be viewed here.
Please take some time to read through the policies and sign this Google form Acknowledgement of Students Rights & Responsibilities Handbook acknowledging that you are aware of and have reviewed the RPS Handbook, outlining the District policies. Thank you!
2022 MCAS Results Update
SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS!
Arrival
- Please drive slowly up Edgemont to keep everyone safe; remember, it is one way.
- Do not park in the indented section by the gym. This is the "kiss & go" area for a quick drop-off.
- Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:25. Your child needs to be in the doors by 8:25 AM. If your child gets to school after the doors have closed, they must come to the front door and be marked tardy.
Dismissal:
- At dismissal time, there is no live pick-up in the driveway except for students who take the bus. Kindergarteners exit the building at 2:40 PM. The rest of the students dismiss at 2:45 PM from the same doors they enter in the morning.
As a safety reminder, the staff parking lot is staff-only. We respectfully ask that caregivers park along the streets. With our students exiting from their external doors in the parking lot, having cars drive in and out is not safe. You need to walk around the school on the blacktop to the back. Thanks for helping us out.
Ready to Play the Best Way
Please do not have your children wear flip-flops. Sneakers are best, but flip-flops are dangerous when running at recess.
Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds
School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds as much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick-up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.
