SMS Weekly Update
December 8, 2023
Dear Archers,
With the holiday season firmly upon us there are those certain school traditions that seem to be a part of every school, including our contribution with both food and gift drives recently behind held on our campus. Below you can see a picture of some of our leadership students with the gifts that were collected during our gift drive. This year our students recognized the importance of finding gifts for older students in need and encouraged the SMS community to donate gifts that would be more appropriate for teenage students. We are so proud of them for noticing a need in their community and working hard to help address the need and improve the lives of others. What a statement about the kind hearts that live in our students.
Speaking of kind, that was this month's theme for Students of the Month. Our Student of the Month program is off and running and we have really enjoyed celebrating nearly 100 students so far this year. We are celebrating a different theme each month centered on the traits and skills that we hope SMS students possess by the time they move on to the High School. It has been such a treat to invite more families in to our building, celebrate the amazing young people that make SMS so special, and start our Friday off on a delicious note.
Thank you for all that you do to help us make SMS such a wonderful place to be.

Request for Partnership
Restroom Vandalism
As this vandalism takes the time of our custodial staff to clean or repair, often these restrooms need to be shutdown during the day when this vandalism is discovered. When this occurs in multiple restrooms on the same day students are left without facilities closer to their classroom and must walk across campus to use available restrooms. This negatively impacts the amount of time they are in the classroom. Please help us ensure that our students have close access to restrooms by discussing these events with your student(s).
Concerning Language on Campus
Recently we have noticed a concerning increase in the use of inappropriate or derogatory language among our students, and we are asking for your partnership in reminding your child(ren) about the impact that their words can have on others. All students are entitled to an educational environment free from discrimination and harassment, and to protect this right SMS does not allow harassment, bullying, or inappropriate language, including:
Discrimination or hate speech based on perceived race, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin
Swearing
Sexual harassment
We work diligently to manage inappropriate language and behaviors here on campus and assist students in being successful, including being a positive part of the SMS school community, and we appreciate your help in reiterating these expectations with your child(ren) as well. For more information about SMS behavior expectations and potential impacts, please visit our website at the link below.
The Business
Student vs. Staff Volleyball
We will be holding our first Staff vs. Student event this year on Friday, December 15th with a volleyball game at the end of the day. These are always an exciting opportunity to showcase what students are learning in PE and create a little competition on campus! We are still accepting student participants until Monday at the beginning of first period (8:45 am).
We will be randomly drawing students to participate from all names entered on Monday. Students may sign up here for a chance to compete, or check their email where they received a link earlier this week.
Order Yearbooks Today
From Tuesday, November 28 to Sunday, December 31, we are holding Treering's Yearbook Donation Match Event. You have the option to purchase a yearbook to be donated to a student in need when you order your copy, and Treering will match that for the first 5 donated (making 10 yearbooks available to gift to students in need). Remember, yearbooks can be purchased anytime and still be personalized until the print due date near the end of the school year.
Attendance Matters!
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school, and is important for academic success and social well-being. During the winter months our district often sees increases in student absences across grade levels -- particularly after longer breaks such as our upcoming Winter Break.
To help your student be successful at school, it’s important to have a good routine at home that leads to regular attendance, as well as to discuss the importance of school attendance with your child. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students are accessing their learning and know why being at school is so important for staying on track for graduation and other future goals.
When getting ready to come back to school after the Winter Break, here are some tips that can help re-establish your “time for school” routine:
Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks/lunches the night before.
Develop a backup plan for getting to school in the event of a transportation issue.
Try to schedule non-emergency medical appointments or extended trips for days when school isn’t in session, or during after school hours.
Monitor your child’s academic process, and contact your child’s teachers with any concerns you have about grades or coursework.
If you have additional challenges or concerns that prevent regular attendance, please contact our school office or your child’s counselor so we can assist you in connecting to resources that will support good school attendance.
In addition, we want to support families in being more aware of their child’s attendance. Beginning next week, families of students with declining attendance will begin receiving updates via email letters or by phone. The goal with these notifications is to ensure all parents/guardians are provided with timely information as our partners in improving school attendance.
We hope our students and families enjoy the upcoming Winter Break, and we look forward to welcoming all of our students back to school on Wednesday, January 3.
