Columbia Central Weekly Bulletin
Week of February 5th
What's Happening This Week: 🏐🎶
Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoyed the sun this weekend.
We have a busy week at Columbia. Our boys and girls volleyball games are happening this week with a few of them taking place at Columbia. Feel free to check out one of our games. Also, our school play, Dear Edwina, is taking place this Friday and Saturday at 7 pm. We still have a few tickets left. For more details take a peek at our flyer below.
The end end of Trimester 2 will be coming to an end soon (Feb. 16). Please log into PowerSchool and check out the progress of your child thus far this semester. If you have any questions about grades or make up work please contact your child's teacher.
Remember the importance of good attendance. Some times I will get a call from a parent regarding tardies because the parent is dropping off their child well before the tardy bell. What occasionally happens is the student in this situation is in the school building on time but habitually tardy entering the classroom. Attendance takes place in the student's homeroom classroom. If you have any questions about tardies please reach out to me and I can assist you in this matter. Also, if you recall, unexcused absences and excused absences are all the same in the eyes of the state. A student is considered chronically absent if the student misses 17 or more days of school. As a staff, we have seen in our most recent data days that poor attendance in every case has resulted in poor academic performance. Students considered to be chronically absent at Columbia performed below the 25th percentile on our most recent Winter MAP assessment. Given the strong correlation with attendance and academic success, I hope you know how important it is to get your child to school on time every day.
Let's make it a great week!

SEL Second Step Program
Dear Parents,
In this week’s Second Step lesson, your child will describe how empathy can help someone identify and solve a problem in their community.
They will learn how to recognize the information their emotions can give them in different situations and how that information can be helpful. Your child will learn how their brain handles strong emotions and brainstorm positive and negative decisions they might make when they feel a strong emotion.
Parents, ask your child about a poor decision they made because they had strong emotions. Help them think of ways to turn that poor decision into a positive one if they feel that emotion again.
