Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
On behalf of all of us at CHS, we were excited to see students back here in person this week. Thank you students and families for engaging in distance learning during inclement weather. While it may be challenging to learn in a different setting, we’re impressed that our attendance was around 85% each day. Your partnership is much appreciated in managing the challenging situation to stay connected to learning.
Along with inclement weather comes a lot of postponements and cancellations. Please check the schedule under athletics for updated dates and times. Even with the crazy weather, CHS students continued to shine. We are so proud of Ava Coleman, Patricia Campbell and Gracelyn Chaffee for making the OSAA 5A All State Dance team. Our athletes are busy on the court, field, and in the arena representing Canby with athletic prowess, kindness, and grit. Our thespians are showcasing their awesome skills in a variety of ways. We are truly #canbyproud.
For our 9th-11th grade students, we will soon begin the process for forecasting for the 2024-25 school year. The week of February 5-9th has events designed to help families make an informed decision about student classes for next year. These steps ensure student access to rigorous and relevant curriculum that sparks their interests. It’s important to note that this is how we choose what’s offered next year as well! Look for more information in the upcoming weeks.
Next week, on Wednesday, January 31, we will host in person conferences from 5-8 PM. This is a great opportunity to connect with teachers and counselors and get important updates and information. We hope to see you there.
Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in the upcoming Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science.
Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
We will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates for your students’ grade level and ways to support your student’s success. You can find more information on our district State Assessment webpage. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.

Boys Basketball
The varsity boys basketball team scored a season high 93 points in their league road win at Milwaukie. We had 5 players score in double figures, led by 22 points from Dallas Michel and 20 points from Jack Brauckmiller. We played at a very high level offensively pushing the pace through the whole game.
Girls Basketball
It was a terrific team effort in the varsity girls basketball 63-43 win over Milwaukie. Tayla Borntrager was the leading scorer with 20 points, while Katie Spillum put up 14 points. Harmony Davies racked up 7 rebounds and Marlo Johnson had 7 steals. It was team defense that got Canby the early lead, and a late run that pushed the lead in the fourth quarter. Altogether a great defensive effort from our girls!
Unified Basketball
Unified Basketball took a road trip to Liberty High School in Hillsboro and brought back a win, 42-41. The entire team fought hard and battled during a back and forth contest. The Cougars took the lead with 30-seconds left on the clock, then played suffocating defense and came up with a crucial steal to seal the victory.
Swimming
Canby Cougars swam against Hillsboro High on Wednesday January 25 at Parkrose High School. Canby Girls came away with a 129 to 17 point win, while the Canby Boys finished 94 to 52. It was great to have an away meet, especially in the pool that we will have the District Meet in. Hillsboro also swam against Parkrose and Hillsboro came out the victors. Click HERE for Coach Laitenen’s Breakdown.
Boys Wrestling
This week, the boys wrestling team beat Parkrose 60-3, and beat Hood River 63-13 to remain atop the NWOC league. The varsity team is currently 6-0 in league and has 12 out of 14 wrestlers currently ranked top 10 in the state.
Girls Wrestling
The girls wrestling team beat Parkrose 24-12 on Tuesday, and lost to Hood River 42-30. The girls are currently in third place in league with a 4-2 record. Emilia Ensrud is ranked 4th in state with 21-1 record and Madi Kidwell is currently ranked 3rd with a 19-0 record.
