Stanley Chen Represents Herricks in All-Eastern Honor Orchestra
Herricks High School is proud to announce that senior Stanley Chen has been accepted to the NAfME All-Eastern Honor Orchestra as a bass clarinetist. A total of 719 musicians from throughout 11 states in the Northeast were selected for one of five prestigious ensembles, and Stanley is among only 165 students that gained entry to the Honor Orchestra.
This year’s All-Eastern experience will be held virtually from March 4-6 and will feature guest speakers, master classes with professional musicians, rehearsals, networking opportunities and more. The Honor Orchestra will be conducted by Dr. James Tapia of Syracuse University.
According to NAfME, students will individually record their performances from home and the recordings will be edited together to produce a collaborative concert that will take the spotlight on April 23 at the 57th NAfME Eastern Division Virtual In-Service Conference.
“We continue to be very proud of Stanley for his hard work and dedication to his music and to our music department,” said Director of Music and Performing Arts Anissa Arnold.
CONGRATULATIONS CAROLYN LAU!
The Ringling College of Art and Design Creative Writing Program was created to support, empower, and honor young writers. It’s an exciting time to be a writer thanks to the increasing number of narrative possibilities that new technologies and media offer. We believe that well-told stories can speak truths and communicate ideas in a way that nothing else can.

WELCOME TO HERRICKS- MR. JAMES ZERVAS, DIRECTOR OF MATHEMATICS K-12
The Herricks Public Schools Board of Education and Administration appointed James Zervas as the new Director of Mathematics K-12 on Jan. 14. He joins the district with extensive experience as an administrator, most recently having served as Department Chairperson for Math, Business, Technology and Science in the East Rockaway School District.
Mr. Zervas has observed teachers, analyzed data, co-led math and science committees, taught numerous math courses and supported East Rockaway’s Science Research Program. He was instrumental in updating elementary math and science programs, accelerating eighth grade students to Algebra and hosting the VEX Robotics I-Design Southern New York Championships, among many other highlights.
Earlier in his career Mr. Zervas taught mathematics at Sewanhaka Middle/High School, Mamaroneck High School and Smithtown High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Binghamton University, his Master of Arts Degree from Queens College and his Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. He is a member of the Nassau BOCES and Western Suffolk BOCES Math Leaders Collegial Circle.
“I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with the students, families, faculty, staff, administration and Board of Education of the Herricks school system,” Mr. Zervas said. “I feel that my 20+ years of experience teaching math to a diverse population of students in the different districts that I've worked in has prepared me to work in this multicultural district. I will make success in mathematics for each individual student my top priority as the Director. I look forward to getting started!”
“We are pleased to welcome Mr. Zervas to the Herricks family and I look forward to his contributions to our programs in each of the schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Fino Celano.
A LETTER FROM THE HERRICKS SCHOOL NURSES
Dear Parents,
The Herricks community continues to work diligently to keep our schools open, community safe and help reduce the strain on healthcare systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Your assistance is needed to ensure the safety of all.
Our School Physician recommends that in the upcoming weeks as winter weather draws us indoors, we must be extra vigilant in following the NYS health guidelines regarding Covid 19 social distancing ( even when outdoors) mask compliance, testing, quarantining and travel.
The nurse at your child’s school will contact you if your child becomes ill while in school. It is strongly suggested to stay home from school and consult with your private physician if your child has any of the following symptoms:
Elevated temperature, Reddened or discharging eyes, Nausea or vomiting, Diarrhea, Ear Aches, Dizziness, Coughing, Sore Throat, Enlarged glands, Skin eruptions/rashes, Nasal congestion, Runny Nose
Once a COVID test is deemed necessary by your doctor, you must stay home until all test results have returned, not just the rapid test.
If any member of your household has symptoms or is tested for Covid, it is advisable for all household members to remain home until negative tests results are confirmed.
If your child becomes ill at school, it is the parent /guardian’s responsibility to arrange transportation for his or her ill child. The child will be released only to those individuals listed on the emergency cards.
When returning to school after an illness, the child should have a doctor’s note that contains information regarding the illness. The child must be:
Fever free for the past 72 hours without medications (Tylenol or Motrin) for COVID and 24 hours for all other illnesses (ie.Strep./flu).
Be free of vomiting or diarrhea for the past 24 hours.
If an antibiotic has been prescribed, the child must have received a full 24 hour dose of medication prior to returning to school.
Adhering to these guidelines will promote a healthy school environment for everyone in the Herricks community. More information can be found here on our website. Feel free to contact the school nurse in your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
