Seeking Speech and Debate Coach
We're looking for a speech and debate coach! Read on for an overview of what to expect. No prior experience is necessary; the National Speech & Debate Association provides all the training through our school membership.
Preparing Students for Life
Speech and debate is a competitive activity that teaches students communication and critical thinking skills they will use in every stage of their lives. Through speaking, debating, and acting, they build confidence and expand their understanding of the world around them.
With a variety of team and individual competition options, students can choose their own adventure and explore the events that appeal to them.
Debate
Debate involves an individual or a team of debaters working to effectively convince a judge that their side of a topic is, as a general principle, more valid. Students come to thoroughly understand both sides of the topic by considering arguments from all angles. Debate involves a mix of advanced preparation and quick thinking to respond to an opponent. There are events for pairs and individuals.
In this video, two students are debating whether violent revolution is a just response to political oppression.
Acting
In speech and debate, acting is classified as Interpretation, because students are interpreting literature and bringing characters to life. Students choose a published work and portray multiple characters without the use of props or costumes: they create distinct characters using only their bodies and their voices. Performances can be funny, dramatic, or a bit of both! There are events for pairs and individuals.
In this video, two students bring a novel about girls who search for friendship amidst slavery to life.
Public Address
Students research and write an original speech designed to inform or persuade. Depending on the event, this may be done far in advance to allow for polished delivery or visual aids, or created with limited preparation to teach students to think on their feet. Students compete as individuals.
In this video, a student examines the impacts of hatred in our society.
In this video, this student had 30 minutes to research and practice this speech that predicts the long-term effects of the Green New Deal.
Make a Difference Through Coaching
Coaches make speech and debate possible! Every team is led by a coach, or team of coaches, who manage the team and teach students the skills they need to succeed in competition and in life. Speech and debate participation is school-based, but anyone can coach, from teachers to grandparents. No prior knowledge or experience is required—the NSDA has the training and resources to teach anyone to coach!
The NSDA Provides the Tools and Support You Need to Unleash Student Potential
When you become an NSDA coach, you gain access to training tools, curriculum, competitions, and Honor Society recognition for your students. Whether you’re teaching speech and debate in the classroom or preparing students to compete in tournaments, they have you covered.
If you're interested in coaching, please email Dr. Grant at ccgrant@greenville.k12.sc.us.
WHHS Academic Enhancement Day--December 19, 2023
Wade Hampton High School is excited to announce our first Academic Enhancement Day on December 19, 2023. Students who are passing all classes will be allowed to participate in job shadowing, volunteering, college visits or academic remediation in lieu of attending school. Tuesday, December 19th will be a regular school day and we will be on a half day schedule.
Job Shadowing: Students are encouraged to “shadow” a professional in the career field he/she is interested in. This allows students to have hands-on experience and learn the path and process of how to reach their specific career goals.
Volunteering: Students are encouraged to choose a local company or organization to volunteer their time and services. This allows students to gain new skills and give back to our community.
College Visits: Students are encouraged to visit a college or university that they are interested in attending.
Academic Remediation: Students not doing one of the above options will attend school for make-up work or make-up exams.
Participation in Academic Enhancement Day is voluntary, but encouraged. The students participating are NOT counted absent as long as they complete the assignment by the due date. Students must complete a permission form that must be signed by their teachers prior to Friday, December 15th. This permission form will verify that the student is in good standing and does not need to make up any missing work. Students will be required to complete a questionnaire and have it signed by the volunteer agency, business, or college visited. This questionnaire and permission form will be given out to students the week prior to Academic Enhancement Day.
The questionnaire will be due by Friday, January 5, 2024 in order for this absence to be excused. Students who do not turn in the required documentation to the Attendance Office by the due date will be counted as unexcused. Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation to and from the business or college.

College Applications & Scholarship Information.... Schoolinks
Senior Parent(s), it’s that time of year! The counseling office recognizes the urgency to get your senior’s college applications and transcripts submitted in a timely fashion. To help with this process, we have developed a guide for your senior to maneuver through SchooLinks as they begin to complete the tasks ahead. Please use the linked flyer to help your senior with this process. As a reminder, for all written instructions, seniors must be logged into their SchooLinks account in a separate tab. The counseling office will also host a senior parent night, college application day, as well as senior IGPs in the coming weeks. More information will be shared as we approach those dates.
For questions regarding the application process, please feel free to reach out to your senior’s assigned counselor. For information regarding SchooLinks, you may contact Dr. York at lsyork@greenville.k12.sc.us. “
Wade Hampton High School’s PTSA is trying to raise $20,000 this Fall! All business sponsorship funds will go directly to our teachers’ and their classrooms through teacher grants. Teacher grants allow teachers to request specific materials, programs and curriculum which they want/need to increase the success of their students. Wade Hampton PTSA strives to fulfill as many of these requests as possible. You have the opportunity to partner with us in this endeavor. Businesses donating $500 or more will receive a custom banner with the business’ logo which will be displayed at the front of our school in the carline. This allows for daily exposure for your business and lets parents and students know you support Wade Hampton High School. We hope you will consider partnering with us this school year.
To thank you for your donation, we are offering the following incentives:
Business logo and recognition in the Wade Hampton Parent Newsletter
Banner advertising your business displayed prominently on school grounds for the entire school year

Take notice of the Authorized Exits for students. Unauthorized Exits from unauthorized exit doors will result in an automatic 5 day suspension from school. This safety protocol is in place to ensure we can properly secure our school building at all times. Safety is our top priority. We have been very intentional with teaching students about this priority. Please make a point to discuss this at home as well.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures
Take notice of the student drop off and pick up map and procedures.
Do:
Pull as close as possible to the crosswalk near the fine arts center. (GREEN ARROWS)
This will maximize the number of cars that can drop off at any given time.
Drop off your student only in the lane closest to the curb (GREEN ARROWS)
Respect the WHHS Faculty and Staff Members that are directing traffic
Use the visitor spaces for parking when going inside the building
Do Not:

PTA Membership
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! The PTA looks forward to us all working together to make a difference at Wade Hampton High School this year!
The easiest way to get involved and stay informed is to join PTA at https://whhs.memberhub.com/store. Your membership goes a long way toward sponsoring teacher mini-grants which provide classroom equipment, funding additional classroom supplies, and much more.
Of course, it takes more than membership dues to make all this happen.
In addition to your membership, please consider becoming a “Friend of the Generals” by donating $10, $25, or $50 to PTA where 100% of your donation will go directly to support WHHS students and staff. You can find the tab to make this tax-deductible donation also on the link above.
Please contact Karen Sharp at 864-355-0370 if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support of the WHHS PTA!
