Cardinal Post
Thorpe Creek Elementary Student Publication March 2018
Student VOICE and Student CHOICE
The Cardinal Post school newsletter is written by our Thorpe Creek students. Please remember that we are young authors, young journalists. We are mimicking real world journalism and writing with short deadlines and prioritizing breaking news. We are looking at our school through the eyes of 5-11 year olds and sharing what we believe is important for you to know. We hope you enjoy our articles and notice how our writing, photography, and observations grow and mature throughout this school year!
Thank you for reading!

Spring Break is Coming--March 30-April 8
By Izzy Ellis and Savannah Scott: Hey TCE parents! Spring Break is coming up. Do you have something to do with your family? If not make sure to spend some quality time with your kids or other family members. Maybe you want to go and do something with your family but you don't know where to go. Well here are some ideas--go to the zoo! Ot go to the store with your daughter or son to go shopping (If they like it or not)or something for the whole family to do is go camping! Or maybe you want some time alone! That's okay. You can go see a movie alone or maybe with a friend. You could go swimming (if it's warm enough that is)! Something else to do is go eat dinner with your family at a fancy restaurant! But, if you don't want to do any of those things then you may want to just chillax at home but what if there is still nothing to do at home? There is a quiz down below to solve. Have fun on Spring Break!
What is the Principal's name? Mrs. Curran or Miss Darren
Who is the PE instructor? Mrs. Willard, Mr. Via, or Mr. Cushman
By Jasmine Tapscott and Sophie Roberts: Next week is Spring Break. Do you know what you are going to do? I know what I'm going to do--follow my Mom's rules! Spring Break is you get a break from school. First of all WHERE ARE YOU GOING? I'm going to Tennessee to visit my aunt. We'll be doing fun games with them. Are you going on a plane, car ride, bus, truck? My friend Sophie is staying in a house and going to Florida with Sydney Banks. Is that cool? What are you doing for you Spring Break?

Wednesday, April 11--Pancake Dinner, Book Fair, and Young Author Books
BOOK FAIR--By Mandy Abeyta: The book fair is coming up! It will start on Tuesday, April 10 and end Friday, April 13. On that Wednesday, we also have the pancake dinner, and you can also shop that night. What books will you get Cardinals? What will you be reading? I recommend the book Wonder or the Upside Down Magic series. I also like National Geographic Kids. We also have erasers, pencils, and bookmarks. I hope I see you at the book fair!
YOUNG AUTHOR BOOKS ARE HERE! By Leah Norvell: All grades at TCE will be writing young authors! When your kid gets home from school ask them what they are going to be writing about. If you don't know what young author books are, I will tell you. Young author's books are books that your kid will be writing. You kid will choose a topic to write about. It can be non-fiction or fiction. Your kid will research or use their brain to write their books. I think they have until Spring Break. If your kid does not finish before Sprig Break, I think they get to take the book home and work on it. The books will be on display at the Pancake Dinner on Wednesday April 11 from 5:30-7:00.
MORE ABOUT THE PANCAKE DINNER--By Aliza Hinderliter: On Wednesday, April 11 from 5:30-7:00 is the pancake dinner at TCE. It is going to be so much fun. There is going to be the best food like pancakes and sausage and juice. That sounds awesome right? It sounds like amazing foods and lots of teachers that cook the pancakes. Do you think that they will do good. You will have to come to find out. I suggest you come if you like pancakes, sausage, juice, and also milk.

Child Find Information From HSE Schools
What to do if you suspect a disability/Child Find:
If your child is age 2 ½ through 21, attends any school within the Hamilton Southeastern Schools boundaries or you live in our community, and you suspect your child may have a disability, you should contact us for more information.
· For children at least two and a half years of age, but not yet age-eligible for kindergarten, you should contact the Early Childhood Assessment Team at Brooks School Elementary School, 915-4250.
For students who are eligible for kindergarten through age 21, you should contact your child’s teacher, school counselor or building administrator to discuss your concerns and explore the steps to be taken. If your child is not enrolled in public school, you should contact the counselor or building administrator in the building your child would attend if enrolled.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.
