Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
This past week I had the opportunity to do mid-year check-ins with staff and “Coffee with Cari” to speak with parents and families as well as meet with students in multiple classes. It is wonderful to hear multiple perspectives around the celebrations and challenges of CHS.
I also met a group of school board members and district office staff at our Construction site where our students are building a house. This is such an outstanding opportunity for our kids. It is a long-standing program that is part of our robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings here at Canby High. We have programs of study in Agriculture, Computer Science, Early Childhood Education, Business/Marketing, Manufacturing/Engineering, Culinary Arts, Graphic Design/Film, and Construction where students gain real world experiences. We also offer electives in Speech/Debate, Journalism, Theater Arts, World Languages and more. Along with our core course offerings, many of our classes offer college or advanced credit.
We are so pleased to have so many options for our students. These options make the forecasting process all the more important. Please ask your student if they completed forecasting and selected their courses for next year. They should have completed them on Studentvue by today. If they have not, please have them make an appointment with their counselor.
This was another busy week for our Cougar athletes. Our cheerleaders competed in the State Tournament for the first time in years. Our swimmers rocked the district meet with the Women’s Team taking first place and the Men’s team taking second. Many swimmers qualified for the state tournament. See more specifics below. Winter sports are wrapping up with many teams looking forward to district or state playoffs. Beyond athletics, many activities highlight the talents of CHS students. The Cougarbots, our robotics team, recently placed 4th out of 24 teams at their latest competition.
There are many opportunities for students with all interests to get involved. We encourage all students to find a sport or activity that interests them. We know that students who are involved do better in school and want all students to feel connected to CHS. See our Clubs and Activities page on our website for more information.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science. Assessment tasks are tied to grade-level standards and units of study. Each assessment is an opportunity for students to demonstrate cumulative growth and learning over the course of their school experience.
Canby schools begin Oregon Statewide Assessments in March; and Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
Your principal and teachers will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates and ways to support your student’s success. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.
State Testing Dates for 11th graders:
Science=Feb 21-24
Dual Language Program Info. Night
Families with incoming kindergarten students, there will be a Dual Language Immersion Information Session located at Trost Elementary School on Monday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. (English) and 6:30 p.m. (Spanish). Please attend to find out more about our Dual Language Immersion program at Trost, which is open to all families in our district and provides students the opportunity to learn in English and Spanish.
Social Media Information
Social media has become a normal part of everyday life and has great potential to be a wonderful communication tool when used wisely. We want to help make sure our students are being safe and respectful online, so please take a moment to read this quick list of tips/reminders about responsible social media use.
Set reasonable limits. Don’t let social media interfere with your activities, sleep, meals or homework. Consider a cut-off time at night.
Be careful what you share. Remember that whatever you put online can potentially be seen by the entire world, so only share what you are comfortable with other people looking at.
Be polite and courteous. Gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation are harmful online just as they are in person.
Talk about social media. Talk about your social media habits and how your use of social media makes you feel. Keep the lines of communication open.
Use it for good. Social media accounts can be an asset when it comes to college and careers. Consider sharing your creative work or posting about a side hustle or job. Use it to find inspiration on a topic you care about.

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
