The Barrows Weekly Newsletter: October 7, 2022
A Message from Principal Gallegos
Greetings, Barrows Families!
This week's Starburst photos capture some of this week's all-school highlights. Thank you to Mrs. Becker and our Barrows Shining Stars for helping make our Walk to School Days a success; the gorgeous weather didn't hurt either! On Wednesday, four 5th graders (including a dinosaur & Minions) helped teach our school how to be safe (a Barrows Belief) when walking or riding our bikes to school. We learned to look "left-right-left" every time before crossing the road, how to properly wear our bike helmet (and remember always to wear it when riding a bike or scooter), and other important safety tips. On Thursday and Friday, we were able to practice being safe on our walk/ride to school. Fifth-grade helpers passed out bracelets and bookmarks to participants to recognize their efforts.
We had our second fire drill (in the light rain) and shaved off one second of our last exit time (PR: 1 min. 59 sec.). The Fire Department told me that we are the fastest school! Congratulations to our whole school body for quickly and quietly following directions every time!
Unfortunately, due to Wednesday's rain, we were inside for recess, but as you can see in some pictures below, our students enjoyed their time playing collaborative games in the classroom. Others choose to make artwork, chat, build, weave and relax!
This week we had our first in-person (with a virtual option) PTO meeting. Thank you to many of you who attended in person and on Zoom. Barrows has such a dedicated PTO. I encourage all parents to attend a meeting to see what it is all about and connect with other families. Thank you to the PTO Board and event planners for being so welcoming, thoughtful, and organized. Our school appreciates all you do! There is a lot of information below; please read about the upcoming Monster Mash, Cookie Dough Fundraiser, Calareso's Fundraiser (a personal favorite), how to pay your dues, and volunteer opportunities.
I want to highlight the METCO Found Family Apple Picking Day. You do not have to sign-up to be a Found Family to participate, but please sign-up for apple-picking spots. The first 160 to join are free! There are other informational links included to learn more about METCO.
I have also included the most recent pictures of our butterfly still wrapped in its chrysalis, which should be emerging soon!
One of my favorite parts of the last few weeks that I haven't photographed because we are too busy talking, are my weekly lunch/snack times with students in my office. I have met with three groups of fifth graders so far, and we are having fun getting to know each other; I am learning more about what makes this school a special place for our students and how to improve it. Spending time with your children is undoubtedly my favorite part of being the principal here! Once again, thank you for sending such kind, fun and respectful kids to school each day!
I wish you a wonderful long weekend!

Special Thanks for our Food Services Staff
I want to give special and extra thanks to Karen Bryan, Nellie Barbera, and Melanie Lawhorne. These three women prepare and serve lunch for all of our students that order with SMILES ON their faces! We are fortunate to be serving more options that are fresher and according to my lunch poll each day in the cafeteria, better than ever. Although I know that preparing a healthy meal for my own children is an important part of their growth and our family time together, I can honestly say it isn't where I shine. Sometimes we are out of someone's preferred vegetable--the chicken isn't thawed in time and this mom isn't serving up three options-. I just have to cook for three kids, these three women make sure that our students now have multiple options and are cutting, chopping, mix and cooking so much fresh food every day. Lunch is always on time and they have plenty of food for our students. I am so thankful for their service to our school.
Remember, school lunches are once again free for students in the Commonwealth. We look forward to providing nutritious meals for our students!

Butterfly excitement at Barrows!
We think it may be getting close to the time for our butterfly to emerge. We are noticing that the chrysalis is getting more clear and will soon turn black, which means it is close to emerging. Mrs. Walsh is taking care of it for the weekend just in case. Mrs. Leonard shared the following information, so that we can take care of it and properly release it:
- It takes a few hours for the butterfly to dry – it will emerge all crumpled then just hang while its wings dry out and expand.
- It doesn’t usually eat when first emerged – so don’t stress, but if it comes out (let’s say, late Friday) you can do 2 things:
- Put a slice of fruit in the bottom of the cage (good choices are nectarine, watermelon, orange, peach or tangerine)
- If it has had time to dry and it isn’t raining out, release the butterfly. To release you can simply pop open the top of the crate and turn it over – the butterfly will eventually fly away.
If it doesn't emerge this weekend, we will have an exciting experience and will try to record it. Mrs. Walsh promised photos, if it does emerge over the long weekend. The pictures below were taken this afternoon. It is tricky to get a good photo since we do not want to open the container and dislodge it. You can see the shadow of the body in the center photo.

SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS!
Arrival
- Please drive slowly up Edgemont to keep everyone safe; remember, it is one way.
- Do not park in the indented section by the gym. This is the "kiss & go" area for a quick drop-off.
- Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:25. Your child needs to be in the doors by 8:25 AM. If your child gets to school after the doors have closed, they must come to the front door and be marked tardy.
Dismissal:
- At dismissal time, there is no live pick-up in the driveway except for students who take the bus. Kindergarteners exit the building at 2:40 PM. The rest of the students dismiss at 2:45 PM from the same doors they enter in the morning.
As a safety reminder, the staff parking lot is staff-only. We respectfully ask that caregivers park along the streets. With our students exiting from their external doors in the parking lot, having cars drive in and out is not safe. You need to walk around the school on the blacktop to the back. Thanks for helping us out.
Ready to Play the Best Way
Please do not have your children wear flip-flops. Sneakers are best, but flip-flops are dangerous when running at recess.
Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds
School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds as much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick-up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.
