September is fast approaching
Lawrence’s full calendar will be released this week and will focus on our mission statement. Included in Lawrence’s mission is the ability to meet life’s challenges. The COVID-19 crisis has been quite a challenge, but as a school community, we have worked for the children while caring for one another. Each staff member along with the Board of Education has put tremendous effort into the planning that will allow all to meet with success in their learning environment. The events on our calendar will certainly be different this year; virtual back to school nights, virtual meetings; no large gatherings, but our mission will remain to have learners reach their highest individual potential.
In the classroom or remotely
The teaching in Lawrence encourages life long learning and will be seamless between full remote and in-person hybrid instruction. What is seen on the interactive flat panel is mirrored onto remote Chromebooks. The focus is on learning and excellent instruction under the care of dedicated teachers will continue to take place for each and every learner.
Learning in a dedicated space
The research on how to learn best and work remotely indicates that a dedicated space helps the brain function better. This week Lawrence was proud to begin our "borrow" a desk program for learners to have a dedicated study space at home.
Equipment and PPE
This summer the Board of Education (BOE) has approved numerous purchases to provide increased technology and personal protective equipment to allow us to be as prepared as possible for the reopening of schools. The support of the BOE is evident in these decisions.
Sports Canceled Until January 2021
At this time, all Nassau County schools have canceled sports programs until at least January of 2021. Decisions made during this crisis are challenging but made to maintain the safest, healthiest environment.
Opening packets mailed Monday
Class assignments, google classroom, and remote/hybrid lunch procedures are in school opening packets being mailed this week. Daily health screening details via a new app for hybrid students will also be in your packets. Please expect packets via regular mail arriving at your homes late next week.
Independent Coach and Seth Transportation
The district has entered into a contract with two bus companies, Independent and Seth. Bus passes for families that require them will be mailed in a separate mailing from the school packets. Thank you in advancefor your patience during the start-up of transportation.
Mask stamina
Proper face covering is required in a school building and/or school bus. The expectation to wear a mask, properly, will be reinforced in school and on the bus. Two Lawrence masks are being mailed to both hybrid and full remote learners. Anyone who does not wear a mask will be unable to attend in-person instruction and/or ride the bus.
Culturally Responsiveness
The NY State Education Department's framework for culturally responsive education will be one of the District's many focuses of Lawrence's upcoming staff development.
Lawrence leads the way
Last year the District was awarded a second My Brother’s Keeper grant written by William Moss, Director of Academic Affairs. Lawrence was the only Long Island district to be awarded this exemplary practice grant. Continued training for all staff is funded by the grant.
A cultural mosaic
The stakeholders of Lawrence, families, faculty, community, and of course our children are fortunate to be in a beautiful cultural mosaic. The respect and care that we have for one another in Lawrence is something I proudly observe on a daily basis.
