Samuelson's Annual Walk-A-Thon
Samuelson PTO is sponsoring a Walk-a-Thon to raise funds for PTO activities, including purchasing items that focus on student success in multiple areas. Thanks to generous support from this activity in the past, our school has been able to purchase recess activities, library books, and technology.
Tuesday, September 18th: Packets came home with students. Students started collecting donations for walking 30 minutes on the Samuelson Walking Trail. (Participation in this activity is optional.)
Friday, October 12th: Each grade will walk for 30 minutes on the Walking Trail to demonstrate that fitness is fun! Donation envelopes are due today.
Student Safety Is Important
We have all been adjusting to our new school hours. Thank you to everyone who has been doing such a diligent job of getting here on time. We have also experienced some challenges at drop off and pick up. Please review our guidelines below so we can ensure that Samuelson students are as safe as possible.
If you are dropping off your child in a car, please enter on Lindlavista Way. You can drop off along the sidewalk at the side of the school. The area in front of Samuelson, along Bel-Aire Road, is reserved for buses and day care vans only. Stay on the right side of the road as you drive along Bel-Aire. For the safety of your children and other drivers, do not make u-turns in front of the school. This will help traffic move as quickly and smoothly as possible.
If you are picking up your child in a car, enter on Lindlavista Way or Crestmoor Place. Stay in your car in the car line. The children will line up on the sidewalk at the side of the school. When it is your turn, a teacher will place your child (children) in your car. You may then pull forward or around as directed. You must turn right on Bel-Aire Road at dismissal time. The area in front of Samuelson, along Bel-Aire Road is reserved for buses and day care vans only.
Please do not park along Lindlavista Way. One lane must stay open on Lindlavista Way for the car line and emergency vehicles. If you need to park and leave your car, you may park on Bel Aire Road or Crestmoor Place. Be kind to our neighbors and do not block their driveways.
Per the DMPS Parent Handbook, bike riders must be in 4th or 5th grade.
Please note that DMPS has provided each student with a safety reflector for use when coming to school in the morning. These were passed out at the end of September. Please make sure that the reflector is attached to your child's backpack so they can be seen in the morning as the days get shorten and mornings become darker.

Student Attendance
Our number one priority here at Samuelson is your child's safety. Attendance is a huge part of keeping our students safe. If your child will be tardy or absent, please call (515-242-8441) or email (samuelson@dmschools.org) the office by 7:45 AM to let us know. Teachers do their attendance at this time.
Nurse News
We have an exciting opportunity here at Samuelson to be involved in the FLUency Program. FLUency is a philanthropic program that reduces the spread of illness in elementary schools. The program offers free, app-enabled thermometers to all families and school staff, which they use to understand their children’s health and the health of those around them. Please sign up while they are still offering free thermometers.
To join the FLUency Group at your school:
- If you haven’t already, go to the Apple App store or Google Play store from your device and download the Kinsa app.
- Run the Kinsa app.
- Tap “Groups” (iOS) or menu (upper left) > “Groups” (Android).
- Search for your school using the school name and city/state (i.e. San Francisco, California) or Zip
- If found, tap “JOIN GROUP”. If you already have a Kinsa you can just check-mark the box “I already have a thermometer” and tap “SUBMIT”.
