WINSTON-DILLARD SCHOOL NEWS
2024 WINTER UPDATE
FROM THE DESK OF SUPERINTENDENT KELLISON
Hello Winston-Dillard Families, Students and Staff Members,
We have some outstanding students who were recognized at the board meeting for the Superintendent Academic Award for the month of February. These three elementary students are stars in the classroom and their teachers took great pride in sharing all the fabulous qualities these students have. Students of this caliber take their education seriously, help others in the classroom, and make our community a better place to be. Please congratulate the following students on their achievement:
Brockway Elementary School – Samuel Keomanivong
Lookingglass Elementary School – Hayze Lonie
McGovern Elementary School – Ally Dickover
Also, to the parents of these great kiddos – thank you for everything you do to support your students! We know that this is a great partnership that we could not do without YOU!
My best,
Kim Kellison

BROCKWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
For the 10th time, our “One School, One Book” committee has narrowed this year’s book down and I am happy to announce that, February 6th, we began reading Gooseberry Park and The Master Plan. This event is designed to create a shared reading experience within our school community. Every family received the same book and is encouraged to read the book, as a family, over the next two-week period. The Brockway teaching staff will provide activities at school to promote and enrich this shared reading experience.
Shout out to all the families that have completed our Winter STEM project! This year’s project had families experiment with building ramps for their snow sleds! Families can share photos of the process or just document progress along the way. The most important part is to ENJOY the time with your child. A couple of projects that were brought in are pictured!
Finally, this year we welcomed Mrs. Olson to our special education department and is doing amazing things with our students. She is working with the YMCA to create a weekly hydrotherapy program for students that enhances social skills and self-confidence, improves developmental milestones, and increases range and strength of motion. Shout out goes to all of our special education staff for making this a successful adventure in learning, for our students.
Thank you,
Kerry Dwight

MCGOVERN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Dear McGovern Families,
McGovern is so excited to have students and staff back for 2024.
The week of February 5 – February 8 we celebrated Counselor Appreciation Week. We are so grateful for our counselor who has developed several social and emotional learning groups that focus on building friendships, improving conflict resolution strategies and developing positive self-esteem.
This winter we have focused on Empathy, Perseverance and Honesty with our daily lessons that develop and grow students to become Character Strong.
Our students have the opportunity to earn cheetah spots for Positive Behaviors and are able to purchase incentives such as lunch with the principal, extra recess with one friend, or attend an ice cream social.
This winter McGovern has been hosting Douglas Recreation basketball teams for practice. We are so happy to have our students participating in healthy, extra-curricular events that benefit their growth and development. Thanks to Douglas Recreation, parents, and volunteers for making this opportunity possible for our students.
Happy New Year!
Here are some of the great events happening this winter.
o Kids Heart Challenge – Beginning, Monday, February 12th
o STAR Student Assembly – Thursday, February 29th

LOOKINGGLASS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Winter time has been filled with rainy day recess and excitement here at Lookingglass. Students have been utilizing the new covered play area when the weather has been less than inviting. Driving by you will see preschool skipping around with jump ropes, and fourth graders playing rousing games of four square. The new covered area has given students a safe and dry place to spend the winter months.
In the warm inviting classrooms of Lookingglass math engagement has been in full swing. With the implementation of the new board adopted math curriculum iReady students are discussing and talking about math daily. To enhance students iReady participation staff has worked to create a monthly iReady challenge where students, as they pass lessons can adorn the front window with the cut-outs of the months theme. In December students decorated a tree with ornaments, in January students added snowflakes to a math blizzard, and in February students have worked to cover the window in paper hearts. This is a fun new way to celebrate out GIANT gains in math!
Lookingglass TAPS (parents booster club) has been working tirelessly to bring students and staff needed materials and fun experiences which make LES such a special place to be. TAPS hosted a Valentine’s Day skate, pie social, Winter fundraisers, and snack days just to mention a few of their many activities this past season. The staff and students are, as always, very thankful for their support and hours of volunteer time they put in.
From start to finish Winter was been showering us with student engagement, activities, and a blizzard of learning. We now begin to look forward to flowers blooming and the beginning of spring. Go GIANTS!

WINSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL
During our second quarter of school, we did many interesting things. One of the things we did this quarter was a holiday hot cocoa party. During literacy, there was a table lined with mugs and hot cocoa toppings such as creamer, whipped cream, sprinkles, and marshmallows. We each got to pick out our toppings as well as a holiday themed mug that we got to take home afterwards. We also had an activity called Twas the Night Before December where students could participate in various activities including crafts, games, and karaoke. The crafts were fun and engaging and at the end, you had something that you could take home and give to a friend or family member for Christmas. Shortly after that, wrestling started for boys and girls. They all did amazingly and our girls’ wrestling team took first at districts. Our girls’ basketball teams also played well during their season, and boys’ basketball has just begun. Finally, we had the yearly Book Fair. For a week only, students and teachers alike had the opportunity to go into the school library and choose to buy a book, poster, or stationary item from the wide array they provided. There was also a raffle where students could be chosen to win a free book of their choice. All of these activities were lots of fun and they made the second quarter (and beginning of third quarter) of school very memorable for all of us.

DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL
As the cold and rainy winter months move along, students at Douglas High have been as busy as ever. ASB Leadership just put on the winter Snow Ball. Trojans danced the night away in the Commons under sparkly snowflakes and twinkling lights. Leadership would like to thank the chaperones that volunteered their time to come help ensure that the dance was safe and fun.
Winter sports are reaching the end of their league seasons with districts coming up for our boy’s and girl’s wrestling team and a possible state playoff berth for the boys’ basketball team. Our boys hoopers are currently ranked in the top 10 in the state at the 3A level and sit atop the northern division of the Far West League.
At this week’s assembly dozens of Trojans were recognized for excellence in attendance as part of Mr. Anderson’s “Trojan Elite” club. Students above 90% attendance for the year were entered into a drawing for a Trojan Elite t-shirt. Students above 97% attendance received hoodies. Trojan Nation is proud of these students for exhibiting grit every day and giving their best at school.
