TALKING ABOUT IMMIGRATION WITH YOUR STUDENTS
We never want to shy away from the hard things, especially the hard relevant things. This was one of them. But in order to help equip you parents, we want to give you a few things to start with. When beginning these conversations there are 3 things we suggest: 1) Pray and study. Begin by asking the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom for yourself on these topics. And then study the issue from reputable sources. 2) Evaluate the worldview beneath the topic itself. A worldview is the lens by which you see the world. It carries with it the underlying ideas and thoughts on any given topic. Much of the time our youth want to argue the symptoms of the issue but rarely do they dig deep enough to understand the worldview implications beneath them. If you want a solid starting point on this, I recommend Al Mohler's podcast called "The Briefing" 3) Ask questions and be an ear rather than a mouth. Approach your students with non-threatening questions like "Hey, this whole immigration this is pretty big on the news...what are your thoughts on it? Why do you think that way?" And then just listen for those worldview stances and keep them in mind. Don't immediately respond. You'll maybe start to realize that yes, though they claim to be Christian they might have a non-christian understanding of murder, grace, compassion, etc. As a parent, help them build a consistent worldview.
