The Sumter Tribe of Cheraw Indians

We hope that everyone is doing well and staying safe during these unprecedented times. The tribal council is dedicated to assisting our members through this pandemic. Council members have been working fervently to gather donations for tribal members and the community, such as care packages. These care packages contain items such as disinfectants, toiletries, sanitizer, masks, boxed/canned goods and more.

Due to COVID-19, the 7th annual Native American Festival in November was canceled. This was a difficult decision to make since this is our biggest event of the year, but the most important thing is the safety of others. With that being said, we want to take this year to focus on preparing for our next Native American Festival in November 2021. We will give updates throughout the year via newsletter, so please look out for more details coming soon!

Although COVID-19 has limited our ability to host cultural events, we have still maintained our fundraising efforts. We recently had a Boston butt and chicken dinner sale, which did fairly well with the limited amount of people who participated. The money that is made from our fundraisers go directly to the tribe.

We are planning on doing another Boston butt sale for Memorial Day. It will take place on May 28th and pick up will be at 4pm at West Mark Plaza across from Palmetto Subs. We would greatly appreciate members to sale a couple if possible! All of the Boston Butts will be fresh off the grill!

Angela Delores Oxendine

1958 - 2021

Angela was the younger sister of Chief Ralph Oxendine. She will be remembered as a loving spirit and beautiful soul. A woman respected and loved by all.

Earl Miniskins was the firekeeper for the Lumbee Tribe. He was a well respected member in the Native American community and will be greatly missed.
