Our FVES Vision
Dear Flower Valley Community,
It was fabulous welcoming back our staff and students after the Thanksgiving break! There is so much we are thankful for at FVES. Take a look at the picture below. This is our Gratitude Tree; it shows just how much our students and staff are grateful for. We are also very appreciative of the beautiful Grateful Grams you have sent to all of us. We are so fortunate to be able to serve this wonderful community!
This week marked our first week with the recess and lunch shift. We have seen such a positive impact from this shift, particularly with regards to the behavior and noise level in the cafeteria. We could still use your support reminding students of the importance of cleaning up their spaces and treating staff with respect. While we have seen a drastic positive change in this with the switch, there is still room for improvement. We have also been able to welcome back soccer which was a huge hit for so many of our children. With goals and pinnies and more guided support during soccer, we are seeing an overall more positive opportunity for students. We still appreciate all that you can do to help students understand that soccer at recess is very different from soccer clubs and teams. Soccer at recess is for fun and includes all students who want to try playing; it is not competitive.
This upcoming week is a big week. The mobile science lab will be visiting FVES. We can't wait for the hands-on learning focused on agriculture. It is a field trip right here on site!
Don't forget that Open House is coming up December 15th. There is information below. Please make sure to sign up for a time to visit FVES. We are very excited to welcome our families, so that you can see a glimpse of what your child experiences on a daily basis.
Thank you for your continued partnership!
With Firefly Pride!
Dr. Fish

Mobile Science Lab at FVES
The Mobile Science Lab will be visiting Flower Valley during the week of December 4th-8th, 2023. If you would like to volunteer to help set up the lab and experiments, please sign up here.
Mobile Science Labs are presented by the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, Inc. (MAEF) as part of the Maryland Ag in the Classroom program. Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery County Government are partners in this program, which provides a “field trip experience” to elementary school students without leaving the school’s property.
Mobile labs visit elementary schools where Kindergarten-Grade 5 students investigate issues pertaining to the environment with a focus on agricultural concepts. Lab investigations are conducted around grade level aligned themes and provide students with opportunities to practice scientific and engineering practices that address the Maryland State Curriculum Standards. Depending on the grade of the students, the lesson will target one or more of the following content areas: characteristics of seeds including soybeans, benefits of trees, science of chocolate and soybeans, healthy habits, and environmentally friendly agriculture.
FVES Family Open House: December 15th - Time to Sign Up!
Attention, Families! Join us for our annual Open House event on Friday, December 15! It's an incredible opportunity to step into and explore your child's classroom and get a glimpse of what makes Flower Valley so special. Please sign up using this link. You will have the option to request an interpreter when you sign up. This year, we are asking our families to make connections between what they observe during Open House to their own school experiences. We can't wait to hear your responses!
Families will have the opportunity to choose the 30 minute time frame(s) that best fit your schedules.
9:30 am -10:00 am
10:15 am - 10:45 am
1:45 pm - 2:15 pm
2:30 pm - 3:00 pm
We would like to be as flexible as possible for families with multiple children, so you will have the opportunity to sign up for multiple time slots in different classrooms OR visit multiple classes within one time slot.
We do expect this to be a popular event, but don't worry if you cannot make it! Teachers will reach out with details about this event as well as future opportunities for you and your extended family members to visit in the classroom.
FVES Reading Corner
Attendance Matters!
Woo hoo! FVES had the best attendance out of all of our cluster elementary schools. Attendance makes a huge difference in the academic and social outcomes of our students. Keep up the great work!
Welcome to Our Newest FVES Teacher: Mr. Thornton
We are thrilled to let you know that we have been granted an additional part-time teacher for our 4th grade. As many of you know, our enrollment has increased drastically this year. Specifically, our 4th grade classes have exceeded 30 students. We will be welcoming Mr. Michael Thornton as our newest 4th grade teacher starting December 4th. He will be here for the second half of the day and will begin by supporting and co-teaching the reading, writing, social studies, and science lessons. Starting the 3rd quarter, we will be shifting some of our 4th grade students to a new section of reading, writing, social studies, and science to account for the additional section. We are thrilled that this will decrease class sizes to a more appropriate level, and we are excited to welcome another perspective to our FVES team.

Need a Chromebook for home?
You are receiving this message because this year, your child’s school is using a classroom cart model for Chromebooks. This means students use an assigned Chromebook while in school, but do not bring their Chromebook home each night. As we move into the winter months and plan for potential emergency closures, your child will need access to a device at home to engage in homework, interactive resources and potential virtual instruction. If your child does not have access to a personal or home computer, a parent or guardian should complete a form to request an MCPS Chromebook. The device will be checked out to your student and will be kept at home for the school year. The device will need to be returned at the end of the school year or sooner if your student is leaving MCPS for any reason.
To request a MCPS Chromebook for home use, please complete this form: Chromebook Form to Distribute to Families
