The Schools Foundation PSN Session 4, Featuring Ron Clark
Ron Clark, who has gained national acclaim for his out-of-the-box teaching techniques and his ability to help at-risk students become high achievers, gave the keynote address at the Principally Speaking Network Session 4 on February 19th and BHS administrators and teachers attended the highly anticipated event. Presented by The Schools Foundation, Clark spoke to local education foundation leaders, administrators, and educators at the VBC. Ron thoroughly captured the audience's attention by engaging participants with song, dance and inspiring classroom stories.
A teacher since 1995, Clark has taught in some of the most challenging schools in the country. In 2008, he was named to “People Magazine’s” Heroes Among Us and in 2000 received Disney’s American Teacher of the Year Award. Clark told participants that he sets high academic expectations for all of his students and taps into students’ interests and pop culture to help engage them in learning.
“I look for anything those kids love – chocolate milk, rap music, double-dutch jump rope, video games – and I pull those things into the classroom to help me teach,” he said. Clark sang and danced throughout his presentation, demonstrating how he uses popular music to help students learn concepts, as well as release energy so that they can better focus on learning.
While Clark’s teaching techniques may be unconventional, his classroom management style is much more traditional. Since he began teaching, Clark has developed 55 classroom rules ranging from basic manners and etiquette to respecting others and having a positive attitude. When talk-show host Oprah Winfrey heard about Clark’s rules, she recommended that he write a book about them. The book, “The Essential 55,” was published in 2003 and quickly became a best seller.
Clark used the proceeds from his book, and subsequent books, to create “the school of his dreams” in inner-city Atlanta. The Ron Clark Academy is a private middle school staffed by some of the most innovative teachers in the country and incorporates a curriculum based on worldwide travel. By the time students graduate from the school, they will have the opportunity to visit six continents, he said.
“Not only do we teach our children about the world, but we take them there to experience it,” Clark said, explaining how his school integrates lessons on history, culture, geography, economics to prepare students before their journeys. “We want our students to know about different nations, cultures and religions. If you’re going to be successful in the future in our country, you’ve got to have a global perspective.”
Known to many as "America's Educator," Ron Clark is a two-time New York Bestselling author, the subject of a television movie and founder of The Ron Clark Academy. Ron is regularly featured on network and cable television (The Today Show, CNN and Oprah) and was dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as her first "Phenomenal Man."

The Principally Speaking Network (PSN) is designed to build a sustainable network of professional support among principals. Principals meet to enhance leadership skills and to network and learn from each other, focusing on improving performance of teachers, resulting in improved academic achievement for students.

JUNIORS - CLASS OF 2016
Save the Date - Tuesday, April 28, 2015
All 11th grade students will take the ACT Plus Writing at BHS during the school day. The Alabama State Department of Education is requiring that all 11th grade students in the state of Alabama take the ACT on the selected date. Students will not be required to pay a fee for the ACT given on April 28th.
Registration will also take place prior to the actual test date at BHS, so there is no need to register online. Please keep in mind that the April 28th test date will not appear on the ACT website because this date has been selected specifically for 11th grade students in the state of Alabama.
Students will receive more information regarding the April 28th test date as we get closer to that time. A username and password for online ACT test prep will be provided to all current eleventh graders prior to the ACT test in April.
ACT study packets can be picked up in the guidance office.
The make-up date for the ACT Plus Writing assessment will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015.
Counselor Contacts: Mrs. Dee Gordon, Mr. Dan Schwanke, Mrs. Stephanie Wheeler

2014-15 Madison County Schools' Testing Schedule, All Grade Levels.
Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.
Car Riders
Students are NOT allowed to walk to Winchester Road to get in a car after school. ALL cars must pull onto campus to safely pick up car riders. Students who do not follow this rule will be suspended, per Mr. Markham. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.
Outside Food
Please remember that it is Buckhorn High School's Policy to NOT allow any outside food to be delivered to the school during regular school hours. (This policy does not apply to a 'brown bag' lunch that is prepared at home and brought to school by the student).
Checking Student Out of School
It is Buckhorn High School's policy to NOT allow student check-outs after 3:15 p.m.
Only custodial parent(s) will be allowed to check a student out of school, unless the custodial parent(s) has specifically designated someone else to check the student out of school. School officials will keep accurate records as to whom, what time, and for what reason students are checked out of school. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 21 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
Student Publications
The Board of Education authorizes school officials to allow students to have student sponsored publications within the school, and expects the administration to monitor such publications to the extent that disruptions do not result from the contents. Student publications are subject to and will be expected to meet standards associated with responsible journalism. The principal and student publication sponsor are responsible for the content of such publications.
Student publications not approved by the Principal are not allowed, and the Principal shall not allow distribution of publications without prior approval. A certified person shall be appointed to be responsible for supervising student publications, and shall report directly to the Principal in the production of such publications. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
Media Coverage of School Events
Occasionally local news media visit schools in Madison County to do special reports or follow up on certain news events. As a part of their coverage they often film certain aspects of the school.
It is the principal’s decision whether to allow news media to come into the schools and cover certain events. Extra precautions are taken when the media is covering a sensitive topic or event that might have a negative impact on the school, staff and students.
Parents who have concerns about their child possibly being filmed or photographed by the media should contact the principal. Principals will make every effort to accommodate the wishes of the parent, but it should be understood that it is very difficult to foresee every possible situation that might occur from media coverage of the schools and school events.
