Newsletter to Support Well-being_10.12.23
Dear community,
As we return from a much needed break for many of us, we recognize the heaviness that lingers. At this time, a lot of us are experiencing a tremendous amount of pain, grief, anger, confusion, sadness, and maybe even numbness, while we continue to observe many tragic and horrific world events. Please know you are not alone in your pain, and we hope that you seek the support you need.
In community,

Cornell University is located on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo_hó:no' (the Cayuga Nation). The Gayogo_hó:no' are members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, an alliance of six sovereign nations with a historic and contemporary presence on this land. The confederacy precedes the establishment of Cornell University, New York state and the United States of America. We acknowledge the painful history of Gayogo_hó:no' dispossession, and honor the ongoing connection of Gayogo_hó:no' people, past and present, to these lands and waters.

Graduate Students - Inequality Discussion Group with Ian Lundberg
When: Monday, October 16, 2023 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm
What: CSI’s Inequality Discussion Groups bring together Cornell faculty and graduate students from around campus to discuss and improve their in-progress research.
Ian Lundberg (Information Science, Cornell University)
Title: Undefined outcomes in research on inequality: A causal approach
Abstract: Undefined outcomes are widespread in the study of inequality. We study wage disparities, but people who are not employed have no wage. We study how one's education affects one's child's life chances, but some people have no children. We study whether people marry a high- versus low-status partner, but some people have no partner. Undefined outcomes are concerning because the causal processes that affect the values of defined outcomes (e.g., wage) also affect whether those outcomes exist at all (e.g., employment). Scholars who face this hurdle often feel they have no choice; they have to drop those with undefined outcomes. We show how this common practice can lead researchers astray, and we show that there is a better way. We adapt methods developed for randomized trials with censoring by death, and we illustrate with a series of examples about the causes of unequal outcomes. This project is joint work with Soonhong Cho (UCLA Political Science).
