Results Were Scrambled

This week at Log College Elementary School, the 7th Grade Science classes engaged in their eagerly awaited annual egg drop experiment. In this hands-on activity, students ingeniously designed contraptions with the goal of safeguarding their delicate eggs from the impending fall. The classroom buzzed with creativity as students showcased their talents and innovation in crafting various protective devices. The culmination of their efforts resulted in a suspenseful finale, however the result were scrambled!

Let The Snowman Games Begin!

The Klippers of Klinger Middle School went into the break with lots of spirit and fun, celebrating each of their teams and their work on being Respectful, Responsible, Reliable, and Safe. The Snowman Games had the entire school cheering on students from each team as they competed in fun activities. Students were delighted to see staff join in the fun with a rock, paper, scissors contest, and enjoyed a lip sync video from the staff put together by Mr. Fischer.

Exploded Moments

At Willow Dale Elementary School, Ms. Kohler’s 4th grade students were overjoyed to display and explain their “exploded moments” from a Module 2 lesson in Wit & Wisdom. Using inspiration from the poem, Dust of Snow written by Robert Frost, the students first created a storyboard using illustrations and captions to retell the story told within the short 8-line poem.

Through close reading and analysis of the brief poem, the students discovered the great amount of details included. Next, the students chose one scene from their Dust of Snow retelling to expand upon using a literary writing technique called “exploded moments”. The students then developed the exploding moment using sensory details and figurative language to paint a picture for the reader.

The storyboards are hung proudly in the hallway at Willow Dale Elementary and in this video, you’ll see Nick proudly explain his storyboard.

Along with building skills in reading fluency and text analysis, students engaged in the Wit & Wisdom curriculum are growing as writers, speakers, and listeners. They are soaking in the knowledge and basking in the opportunities to express their thoughts in relation to complex text. Ms. Kohler indicated that she is impressed with her students’ productivity. She shared that most of her students can recite the poem Dust of Snow from memory and that their writing has progressed significantly through repeated modeling and practice with the skills.

Klinger Celebrates Finishing One Book, One School Reading of Refugee

In its fifth year, One Book, One School at Klinger was a huge success. Thanks to Mrs. Goodling and Mrs. London for leading this endeavor and for the support of CEF, and our entire CSD community. Finishing the book, the Klinger students celebrated in many ways, including food festivals with students bringing in many dishes from their countries of origin. Next Monday, during Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, one of the projects will be providing support for Welcoming the Stranger, an organization that assists refugees in this area.

THE ARTS THE ARTS

Willow Dale Winter Landscapes

Students in Willow Dale Elementary art room are looking at the season change of winter for inspiration in their new projects. The Kindergarten and First Grade created winter landscapes by mixing paint to create unique backgrounds. The students learned about the parts of a landscape: foreground, middle ground, and background. Students added sparkles of snow with glitter as their final touches! Happy winter everyone!

GIANT is Feeding School Kids

Centennial School District is pleased to share that The GIANT Company is once again partnering with our Food & Nutrition Department to help support our students facing food insecurity. We encourage the greater community to participate in this effort.

The initiative has been extended an extra month to allow schools to increase fundraising potential.

From January 1 through March 31, everyone who shops at GIANT, MARTIN’S and GIANT

Heirloom Market stores will be invited to “round up” at the register and donate the round-up

amount of their bill to support Feeding School Kids. Customers can also give by converting their

CHOICE Rewards Points to donations in the GIANT app or purchasing a reusable bag.

Following our return to school after the winter holidays, we ask our school community to help

spread the word about the Feeding School Kids initiative to ensure its success. Our goal is to

support the children in our district who need the most help accessing nutritious meals and

snacks. From backpacks with weekend food, to clearing lunch debt, to building a community

pantry in our schools, the funds will be provided directly to our district’s food organization for

use, at our discretion, to address food insecurity in our school community.

Our district looks forward to partnering with The GIANT Company to fight childhood hunger.

Please join me in supporting and advocating for this initiative to help ensure no child in our

district experiences hunger at school or home.
