Eccles Weekly News
October 14, 2022
Dear Eccles Families,
I wanted to give a big shout out to the Eccles PTA, Katie Greer, and all of the volunteers who made our 2022 Color Dash such a success. It was great to see so many of you there! Our school theme this year is Joyful Engagement in Learning and Community and this was a wonderful example of the joy we create when we come together as a community. Thank you!
We look forward to meeting with you next week for conferences. Please make sure to sign up if you haven’t already. We will have another opportunity to gather as a school community the following week for pumpkin carving. We really look forward to seeing you in the building and at upcoming events.
You are a valued member of our school community and your voice is important as we work together to create a positive school experience for our students. We encourage you to contact us when a question or concern arises. You can phone me at 503-263-7121. We are always interested in learning about our students’ school experiences. And when families have questions, oftentimes a conversation with a staff member or myself can go a long way to answering the question or addressing the concern. We really want to partner with you.
Sincerely,
Kelly

Visit PTCFast.com and follow the prompts to register with your child’s teacher—or multiple students can be done at the same time. If you have questions or concerns about availability or accessibility, please reach out to your student’s teacher via Remind.
We want to help you get to know who we are. Each week we will highlight a couple of staff members. Enjoy getting to know a little bit about us!
Meet Ms. Selevan!
Ms. Selevan is known as Ms. S to her students. Ms. S is the lead teacher in our SOAR classroom. Ms. Selevan has been teaching students for 32 years! She has been working for the Canby School District for the past 6 years. Her eldest daughter and 6-year-old grandson live with her. Ms. S has plants, but no pets. Her favorite authors are Colleen McCullough and Diana Gabaldon. Ms. S values a sense of humor in her friends and her mother is her hero. Ms. S’ motto is, “I know you can do this!” Say, “Hi!” the next time you see Ms. S.
Meet Mrs. Wells-Dunn!
Mrs. Wells-Dunn is a Speech Pathologist and she splits her time between Eccles and Knight Elementary. Mrs. Wells-Dunn has been working with kids for 12 years and she has worked for the Canby School District for the past 4 years. Mrs. Wells-Dunn lives with her wife and child and several pets. She has 2 dogs, a cat and 4 chickens: Fawkes, Caya, Oliver, Light Beak, Dark Beak, Sunlight, Tofuis. Her favorite writer is Mercer Mayer and she enjoys friends who are warm and relaxing to be around. Mrs. Wells-Dunn’s hero is Helen Keller. Say “Hi!” the next time you see Mrs. Wells-Dunn!
Art Literacy Volunteer Opportunity!
We would like to invite you to volunteer with the art literacy program. There will be three artists this year, one for each trimester. You will be asked to attend an informational meeting where you will learn all you need to know in order to lead your classroom through the presentation of each artist. We will lead you through the entire lesson so you are confident with the process. You will see the keynote presentation, how to run it and learn about the art lesson. Then we will actually do the art project together. We will be able to answer any of your questions. When you teach the lesson in the classroom, the teacher will be there to help and assist you. No art skills or background is required.
First Meeting
Date: Thursday, October 27
Time: 1:00-2:30 pm
Where: Eccles Elementary School (check in at the front office for location)
First Artist: Norman Rockwell with the medium of colored pencil
Thank you so much for your help! Be sure to complete a volunteer application with the Canby School District, if you haven't already. We look forward to seeing you.
- Deana Calcagno and Ann Johnson
Lost & Found is Growing
Please remember to label your students clothes with their last name so that staff and students can easily find items left at school. Our lost and found is growing fast (not an exaggeration—one wagon was filled in one day). All items will be donated to The Canby Center at the end of Winter Break, Spring Break, and the last day of school.
How can you track a missing item down? Parents and students may come in before school starts, or students may come to the office during one of their recesses. Our lost and found is currently located down the hall and an office staff member can take you down to look.
After-School Child Care
Great news! We have open spots available in our new After-school Child Care Program. We will now fill those spots on a first-come first-served basis. To register, please fill out this Child Care Interest Form, and program director Molly Martinez will contact you with next steps.
Volunteers
Looking to volunteer in your student’s classroom or for upcoming events? If you did not complete this process last year or are a new incoming family, an application must be submitted through the Canby School District.
Here’s what you need to know.
- This must be pre-arranged with the teacher and/or specialist that you are assisting.
- All new* volunteers must be registered and pass a background check in order to volunteer for any classroom, field trip, or activity on-site.
- All volunteers must sign in and out upon entry and exit of the school building.
We look forward to having you join us!
Meals at School
We are excited to welcome back our broadened meal selections this year, including the salad bar! Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals, and now offer expanded income guidelines to qualify more families.
If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online at https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp - Our district ensures that our nutrition programs are easily accessible to all families.
> Click here to put money on your child's lunch account <
Meals will always be provided to students, no matter their application status or meal plan balance.
Health Reminders
As school begins and we are starting to enter the cold and flu season, please remember to review our district and school health 'stay home guidelines'. If you have any questions about whether a student should stay home, please don't hesitate to contact the office and we can put you in touch with our Health Assistant or District Nurse. We appreciate your help in keeping not only your student, but all other students & families healthy this school year.
***Please remember to send in any medication for your students, which need to be signed in with our Health Assistant (prescription, non-prescription, inhalers, etc).
