Google Tip #1 - Save to Drive Extension
One of the more useful Google Chrome extensions is Save to Drive . The Save to Drive Chrome extension lets you save content from the web and store it in Drive. After you install the extension, you can click on the Drive extension icon to save an image or webpage you are viewing in chrome. It also allows you to save your gmail attachments in drive. Simply right click on an attachment or any link and select “Save Link to Google Drive “. Use this feature when you are at workshops or looking at web content you want to save to use for next school year. Organize it into folders in drive and you will have it handy when you are ready to use it.
To install the Save to Drive feature on your Google chrome browser, open a chrome browser and log into your RRISD Google Apps account. If you log into chrome using the RRISD email icon on your desktop, click on search in the toolbar to open a chrome browser.
Chrome Settings
Click on the Customize Google icon in the upper right hand corner and go to settings. Make sure you are logged into your Google Account.
Extensions
Click on Extensions.
Save to Drive
Go to more Extensions at the bottom of the page. Search for Save to drive and look for the save to drive under extensions and click on add to chrome.
The save to drive icon will appear in your chrome browser toolbar next to the address bar.
To set options, right click on the icon, select google document and check convert to Google format.
After you use the save to google drive extension, you’ll see options to immediately open the file in Drive, rename it, or view it in your Drive list, where you can do things like add it to a folder or share it with others.
Google Tip #2 - Show/Hide Label if Unread
Select the show if unread option next to any label you wish to apply it to:
Now when you receive any new mail related to that label, it will give you a BOLD reminder to check it instead of always being hidden in your More labels section:
Google Tip #3 - Google Keep
Google Keep is an app that allows you to take notes over multiple devices and keep them in one place. With Google Keep you can create checklists, add images and photos to your notes and edit them from any device. If you don’t want to type your notes, record them in Google Keep. There is also a search feature to quickly find your notes.Google Keep is available on Google Play for devices running Android 4.0 and above. To install google keep as an app in your chrome browser follow this link http://goo.gl/gNK62 and add to chrome. Your notes go from phone, tablet to computer and available on whatever device you are using. The app also work offline when you do not have an internet connection.
Google Tip #4 - Google Scholar
Google Scholar is a great search tool that too often is overlooked by teachers and students. In the 45 minute video below, Google Search Engineer Daniel Russell walks viewers through using Google Scholar to get the best results.
Tips and Tricks for using the basic Google search box:
Use a hyphen or minus symbol ( - ) in front of words you want to exclude from your search.
Example: [music –lyrics]
Use a tilde mark ( ~ ) to search for a word AND its synonyms
Example: [music ~lyrics]
Use quotation marks to search for a phrase.
Example: [“like a rolling stone”]
To have Google “fill in the blank,” use an asterisk ( * )
Example: [“like a rolling stone” was written by*]
Use “OR” to get results that contain either word or phrase.
Example: [“Bob Dylan” OR “Robert Allen Zimmerman”]
Use “define:” to get a definition of a word or abbreviation.
Example: [define: folk music]
Make conversions and do math calculations
Examples: [500 euros in US dollars], [10 degrees C in F], [1534/22]
