Updates for the Week of December 5 - December 9, 2022 Updates for the Week of December 5 - December 9, 2022

Dear Shadow Hills Families,

Last week was another eventful week full of learning and traditions you can only find in Alpine. Our Alpine Education Foundation hosted the annual Punkin' Chunkin' for all fourth graders in the District. The students were able to build trebuchets and launch golf balls onto the Shadow Hills fields. Students were put into groups and given minor assistance in creating these trebuchets. Students relied on teamwork and their natural engineering ingenuity. We are proud of all our fourth graders and thankful for our volunteers and AEF. Thank you for hosting this inspiring event.

Our PTA put together a Giving Tree outside the front office. There will be ornaments with donation suggestions on them. If you are able and willing, please grab one of the ornaments and bring the donation item to the front office for families in need. Please see the flyer below for more information.

Lastly, with the weather cooperating on Friday, December 9, we will have our Lunch on the Lawn event. All families will stay outside the black gate and eat on the front grass with their student(s). If you plan to take your child home with you after lunch, please sign them out at the front office.

I'm looking forward to another fantastic week at Shadow. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Meris

Character Education - Gratitude Character Education - Gratitude

Here at school, we have been very busy learning about gratitude - what it means, and how we can practice it! Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help you child continue to learn about the theme gratitude through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! We have really enjoyed exploring this topic at school, and I hope your family will enjoy it just as much!

Reading About It

Here are some books to help you learn more respect:

Bear Says Thanks - By Karma Wilson | Kids Books Read Aloud
Gratitude is my Superpower Read Aloud by Reading Pioneers Academy

Practice It!

Start a gratitude journal with your child! Get a blank notebook and work together to design it. Each night, spend time together adding the things you are thankful for. It is fun to review your list every once in a while to see all of the things you have to be grateful for!

Talk About It!

Here are some discussion points to help you talk about courage with your child:

  • What do you think gratitude means and why is it important?
  • How do you think being grateful for what you have can affect your attitude?
  • What are some big things you are thankful for? What are some small things?
  • What are some things you can do at home and at school to remember to be more thankful?
