World Language Department News
Students in Señora Kasnyik's Spanish classes are presenting on artists and lyrics of 16 different songs, that are popular in the Latin music industry, in an event called "Locotubre". They were asked to fill out brackets with the sweet 16, narrowing it down to one winner of what they portray as the best song. The classes are voting each day along with other schools both nationally and internationally. By mid-November, the winning song will be known and one student from each class will win a t-shirt and the bragging rights of being the "Locoturbre Master." (el/la campeón/a) The goal for this activity is to have the students hear the grammar/vocabulary taught in the songs, have the students add a song or two to their own playlists, and understand the culture of where and why the song was produced. Viva la música latina!
Students in Señora Volzer's class are also using authentic songs in class. Using authentic materials brings the class to "life" as they learn grammar and vocabulary. They are also using the songs as a starting platform for discussions, which promotes speaking in a natural and proficient manner. Next, they will also be starting a cultural study over Los Dias de Los Muertos which will incorporate the song "Un Poco Loco" from the movie Coco.
Our new American Sign Language online course through the “Ohio School for the Deaf” adds value to the World Language Department. This school year we have eight students taking ASL with Mrs. Layport. The ASL course is preparing learners to communicate with the deaf community and promotes inclusiveness within our school and the community.
