Parent/Observer Accounts in Canvas

Starting this week, parents can now create their own "Observer" account, which will allow them to take a peek into their child's "digital classroom." Parents will be solely responsible for the creation and management of the accounts. Detailed information will be published soon for our parents, but we wanted you to have a HEADS-UP before that information is shared.

Parents must know their child's Canvas username and password to set up the account. This should be a conversation between the parent and the child. You should not need to provide this information to parents.

Read Announcements
See Course Assignments Page
Preview Documents (unless the document is locked by a teacher)
See the Syllabus Page
See Quiz Titles on the Quizzes Page
See the Modules Page
See the Calendar
See Grades (for their student only)
Access Conversations

Parent/Observer Accounts CANNOT:

Submit Assignments
Take Quizzes
Join Groups
See Course Discussions (because this would show student names)
Send Messages to Students
See Course Rosters (because this would show student names)
See Unpublished Courses, Pages, etc.

We want to reiterate that this will be fully communicated to parents in the near future, but we want you to know about the accounts now.
