Education is a continuous improvement institution, and we will continue our efforts to meet the needs of the community we serve. I want to thank our parents and guardians who attended Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, September 28. We know your time is valuable, and we appreciate you making it a priority to support the education of your child.
Please check out the calendar of activities coming up in October and November. There are many opportunities to attend an event to see our talented students in our District.
Please remember the upcoming budget continuation election. Ballots will be mailed on October 11 and due on November 7. This election is a mail-in-only election with no polling places.
Have a wonderful month of October, filled with cooler weather and many fun family activities.

Employee of the Month: Rhonda Carter, IEP Writer
(CGUHSD) Rhonda Carter, IEP Writer, was recognized as the October Employee of the Month at the Governing Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 26. “I was joking with Rhonda the other day and told her I was happy the day I found out she was leaving Villago. She looked at me with a bewildered gaze. But you see, when Rhonda left Villago, it opened the opportunity for me to step into her shoes. I took over her classroom. And, here I am, all these years later, following her footsteps again into the high school setting. This year, I have quickly learned that following her footsteps will not be an easy endeavor. Last week, I asked her if she had mentioned her award with Mr. Carter, to which she replied, ‘No, I am still waiting for them to tell me it is a mistake because it is Mr. Carter who is involved in everything at school.’ Well, Rhonda, let me tell you why you deserve to be recognized. You are humble that you don’t recognize or boast about the things you do daily: 1) When you call me or our psychologist, because you know a student needs to speak to someone and you know they are not themselves. You SEE them. 2) When I call you on a Monday night after 9:00 because a teacher will be out for the rest of the week, and I have no idea what lesson plans to give. You stay til past 10:00, ensuring that students will be receiving meaningful lessons while the sub is here. You KNOW them. 3) When I bring a new teacher to you and say, this is Mrs. X starting today and has nothing to go on. Your response: My plan time is 4th period; we can meet then. You CARE about them. 4) The weekly emails when you are checking on students on your caseload and find something that is negatively impacting them and want it addressed. You UNDERSTAND them. I could go on and on. Rhonda, we want you to know that we VALUE you!”
CTE Students of the Month
Career & Technical Education (CTE)
Over 1,600 students are enrolled in thirteen (13) Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs throughout the Casa Grande Union High School District (CGUHSD). Each month, a different CTE program nominates a deserving student for this honor.
October [CGUHS] Construction Technologies: Cooper Dale
(CGUHS) Cooper Dale was recognized Tuesday, September 26, as the October Career & Technical Education (CTE) Student of the Month at the district’s Governing Board meeting. Cooper was nominated by his CTE Construction Technologies Teacher, Mr. Michael Wagner. “Cooper Dale has consistently made himself a valued asset to the Construction Technologies program. Beginning his courses in his sophomore year, Cooper excelled in carpentry, earned his OSHA 10, and, by the end of that year, requested to double down on construction classes for his junior year. As a junior, he hustled through the curriculum as an intermediate and advanced student with two (2) hours of construction daily. Through quality note taking and performance, Cooper earned his NCCER credentials, scored high on the technical skills assessment, completed an OSHA 30 course through Central Arizona College, and was selected as the SkillsUSA Teamworks Carpenter. Cooper is also an outstanding person; well-grounded and humble, he never wants to disappoint his family, teachers, or peers. He places a high emphasis on being a leader and encourages others around him to take responsibility to develop their skills. After high school, Cooper plans to attend trade school at the Arizona Operators Engineering Apprenticeship here in Casa Grande, with an interest in mobile crane operation. Thank you, Cooper, for a job well done.” Cooper’s parents are Mr. Justin Dale and Ms. Andrea Dale of Casa Grande, Arizona. I have found Matthew to be a person of integrity. He displays a positive attitude, performing with a high level of drive and determination. Matthew’s self-confidence allows him to accept responsibility, be open-minded, and lead by example. With respect to Construction Technologies, Matthew exhibits effective leadership by taking initiative, having the ability to work without constant supervision, and solving problems independently. He works well with other students and interacts with team members. Lastly, Matthew is an example to other students. He is involved in the total school program by participating in sports, senior class activities, student organizations, and many other school functions across campus.” Matthew’s parents are Mr. Matthew Guy & Mrs. Kiamesha Guy of Casa Grande, Arizona. Over 1,600 students are enrolled in thirteen different Career & Technical Education programs throughout the Casa Grande Union High School District. Esai’s grade point average exceeds 3.0 and he is ahead on credits. He’s exceptionally proud of his experiences interviewing clinical psychologists and a major influencer, activist, and environmentalist Leah Thomas. Esai has visited such places as the Casa Grande Ruins, Phoenix Art Museum, Grand Canyon University, and participated in the Central Arizona College Math Contest. Collectively, these experiences have allowed him to grow and expand his horizons. Esai plans on either entering the workforce or attending a university/college, aiming to major in either Natural Sciences or Social Sciences. Esai is truly appreciative of his teachers, especially Mr. Fleissner, and his classmates. “My supportive parents, who are very caring, have always made sure I stayed out of trouble and succeeded in school. Summer currently sits at the top 2% of her class with a GPA of 4.567. She has received academic awards throughout the past three years and has also been an AP scholar throughout her high school career. Although Summer’s academic accolades stand out, the time she puts in outside of the classroom is even more admirable. Summer has been the President of both Key Club and the National Honor Society, SADD Vice President, and Secretary of both Mock Trial and Link Crew. She has also completed over 200 hours of community service while volunteering at blood drives, mentoring the youth, and food packing. This has earned Summer the United Nations Ambassador Award for completing 100 hours of community service during her junior year alone. When Summer graduates, she plans to attend the University of Arizona to receive a Bachelor of Science in Medicine with an emphasis in Society to then one day become a Doctor of Neuroscience.

COVID-19 Health Protocol
Tommie Clardy III PACE School Counselor/Success Coach/PE & Health Advisor
Mack Olson, VGHS Mathematics Teacher
Alexi Maestas & Rachel Honeybone, ESS
(CGUHS) Alexi Maestas and Rachel Honeybone have students with the most unique needs on campus and know each other’s students. One day, Alexi was on her way to work when she saw one of Rachel’s students walking off campus, which was definitely not the norm. She pulled over to see if he was okay and where he needed to be. She contacted Rachel and together they ensured the student was safe. Rachel was in contact with the family. This is a perfect example of stepping out from behind the counter to meet the unique needs and circumstances of our students. They both deserve recognition as this is just one of many instances where they showed that our students come first.
Heather DeMartino, ESS Teacher
(VGHS) Heather DeMartino was recognized with the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award for going above and beyond for her students. She takes the students’ emotional well-being seriously and takes time to make sure all her students are getting what they need daily. She spends individualized time with each of her students and has the patience of Job. We appreciate you!
Jasmine Honrada, English Language Arts Teacher
(VGHS) Congratulations to Jasmine Honrada for receiving the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. She is in her second year of teaching at Vista Grande High School and has taken on the massive assignment of Yearbook. She steps up for all her students in Yearbook, as well as her English classes, by being well-prepared, organized, and sympathetic/empathetic with all her students.
Lisa Preecs, School Counselor/Success Coach
(CGUHS) Congratulations to Lisa Preecs, School Counselor/Success Coach, who has absolutely stepped out from behind the counter. Dr. Lineberry says, “As we have worked to change the schedules of over 776 kids to place in credit recovery, Lisa has led the charge. Along with her colleagues, she has worked countless hours on nights, weekends, and school days to ensure the schedules are done accurately and that students are placed appropriately. Without Lisa’s leadership and knowledge, our credit recovery program would not be in the position it is in right now. I cannot thank Lisa enough for her hard work and dedication to our students, especially as demonstrated in the last few weeks regarding this initiative.”
Mary Jane Radel, Payroll Technician
(CGUHSD) Mary Jane Radel, District Payroll Technician, received the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Human Resources Director, Glenda Cole, had this to say, “With turbulent waters swirling all around her, emails and phone calls coming in left and right, Mary Jane kept her cool when the county informed us they were unable to process payroll a few days ago. No one knew when the county would be back online due to a serious breakdown that affected all districts in Pinal County. She stayed late and came in early to be ready if the county notified us they were back online. She answered concerned employees’ emails with the most professional and understanding tone, fielded phone calls, and continued with our scheduled onboarding of new employees without missing a beat. Her concern has always been to make sure she takes care of employees’ pay with the greatest of care.” Mary Jane is a huge asset, and we appreciate her every day.
Rizza Casabuena-Harrison, Mathematics Teacher
(CGUHS) Congratulations to Rizza Casabuena-Harrison for her contributions this year, and for being awarded the Stepping Out From Behind the Counter Award. Dr. Lineberry says, “As we have worked extremely hard to find ways to address the challenge of students being behind in credits, the entire staff has been incredibly gracious in offering to assist. Mrs. Harrison, however, was the first to come in and speak with administration about the proposal and has offered to cover our intensive credit recovery program. She’s taken steps to begin setting up the program and classroom in a manner that will be most beneficial to students. Mrs. Harrison has embodied Leadership Principle 8 “Be Proactive vs. Reactive” and Principal 7 “Team > Me Everywhere, All The Time”.
Sylvester Amorsolo, Science Teacher
(VGHS) Sylvester Amorsolo, Science Teacher, received the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Principal Vance Danzy had this to say, “Mr. Amorsolo has taken on the Department Chair role for the Science Department, and we have not missed a beat. He steps up any time that he is asked to do anything. Any time I speak with a student who has or had Mr. Amorsolo, they often describe his class as difficult and tough, but then, in the same sentence, they say they love his class due to the standards he sets for each student. They all say that the structure he creates in his classes helps them in their other classes. We truly appreciate his efforts in helping us with our monthly unscheduled fire drills due to the wonderful science experiments he does in his classes.” We are so lucky to have him.
Tina Ogle, Federal & State Programs Director
(CGUHSD) Congratulations to Tina Ogle, Federal & State Programs Director. She was presented with the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Renee Morales had this to say, “Earlier this month, I was a witness to a great act of coming out from behind the counter as a team worked to onboard a new international teacher. This teacher’s journey was arduous, to say the least. She had arrived with a bag and the clothes on her back, no currency to buy food, not even set up for housing. The team worked to make sure she was fed and felt safe here in the district office. Upon hearing what was happening, without hesitation, Tina offered up her guest house to the teacher until she was able to find a permanent place. She offered to make sure she was fed and safe. This gesture is a wonderful example of what she has been asked of the district in going that extra mile and coming together for the greater good.” Tina is a tremendous asset to our district, and we appreciate her.

(CGUHS) From September 7-8, our school was so excited to host Rudy Ruettiger, for whom the hit movie Rudy was made. Dr. Chris Lineberry invited Rudy to talk with students about the messages from the film and his experience with never giving up on his dream to play football for Notre Dame. Ruettiger spoke about the importance of encouraging and empowering students by emphasizing that hard work pays off. Relationships are important because when we let kids think they are someone, their dreams get bigger. The setback is your setup, so dream big, don't quit, and be bold, brave, and courageous.
Biology: Biomolecules Analysis
(CGUHS) Ms. Joannet Patun-og’s Biology classes conducted an experiment on biomolecules analysis and did a pretty good job. Students used three (3) sample foods: peanut butter, jelly and apple. To test the lipid content, they used brown paper. For protein content, they tested the sample using Biuret Reagent and, for carbohydrates (sugar), they used Benedict Solution. Students learned that there are different reactions and positive and negative results for each of the sample foods. They gained an understanding that biomolecules are the main component in food.
Biology: Life Under A Microscope
(CGUHS) In Mrs. Brady's Biology classes, students investigated life under a microscope by examining slides with butterfly wings, insect legs, blood cells, pollen grains, and more. Students are always fascinated by what they see under the lens. For example, most students are stunned to see how hairy insect legs are or how intricate the pattern on a butterfly wing truly is. This activity is designed to teach students how to use a microscope and prepare them for their unit on cells.
Biology: Science Is Everywhere, In Everything
(CGUHS) Randy Robbins, Athletic Director, talked to Tamara Santilli’s Biology class about the importance of being academically strong as an athlete. The status of the NEBP was discussed as well as ways in which ASU and CGUHS students might collaborate on future projects. The combined Arizona NEBP team includes Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Casa Grande Union High School. The university students will travel to Roswell, New Mexico, in October, where they will launch two high-altitude balloons, tracked by two separate ground stations, to gather data on the effect of the annular eclipse on the Earth's atmosphere. The Nationwide Eclipse Balloon Project at CGUHS is undertaken by the Near Space Research Team and members of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) as an extension of the CTE Engineering program. NEBP is a part of the NASA Space Grant program. Near Space Research Team: High-Altitude Balloon Flight
(CGUHS) The AZ/NASA Nationwide Eclipse Balloon Project team had a good practice flight on Saturday, September 16. After an almost two-hour delay by the FAA (just like SpaceX!), they were able to launch from I-8 at Exit 161. CGUHS was once again the site of the ground tracking team operated by students from Arizona State University (ASU) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Their burst altitude was 88,990 feet (16.8 miles), and the recovery was north of Highway 87 near Blackwater. The recovered payloads were all in good condition. This is expected to be the last practice launch before the team travels to Roswell, New Mexico, to launch a balloon payload to observe the October 14 annular eclipse. Though not traveling to the Roswell event, CGUHS students will be at ASU Tempe on that date to help with the planned outreach events happening there. The CGUHS Near Space Research Team will participate in a high-altitude balloon launch on November 18 as part of the AZ NASA Space Grant ASCEND! program. The Cougars are advised by John Morris.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the only way to apply for federal, state, and college aid. It is completely free and it typically takes ONLY 30 minutes to complete. Scholarship Opportunities
It is a known fact college is expensive and the cost is rising. Do not let that deter you from applying for college. There are many opportunities to help you cover the cost of college. Scholarships are gifts of "free money" that do not need to be paid back, unlike student loans. Most scholarships can be awarded based on merit, which means that students earn them for having good grades, athletic talent, volunteering, or even for a certain demographic. Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars are awarded in scholarship money. There are many sources of scholarship, such as colleges and universities, military, individuals, communities, nonprofits, ethnic/historical organizations, businesses, religious groups, and more. Some scholarships are highly selective but many are not. The best practice is to apply for as many scholarships as possible and start early.

Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers
(CGUHSD) Created in 2016, the Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program grants classroom wishes to teachers across the state of Arizona. The Fiesta Bowl saw that many teachers spent their own money to enhance their classroom experience and developed a program to aid teachers in that effort. As a way to support, celebrate, and honor Arizona educators, teachers are invited to fill out an online application detailing their school and classroom wish. Wishes are selected by a random drawing to receive a grant. All wish recipients become part of the Fiesta Bowl family and can participate in community events throughout the year. In its seven years, Wishes for Teachers granted over $5.7 million to more than 1,600 Arizona teachers, impacting 700,000+ students across the state. Recipients are selected at random and notified during a Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers Draft Day presented by SRP. Applications close on Friday, September 29, at 5 p.m. Submit your application at https://www.fiestabowl.org/news/2019/10/24/wishes-for-teachers.aspx.
