Johnnie R. Carr Middle School is in its second year of candidacy with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme and is continuing to pursue authorization as an IB World School.
IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

We look forward to implementing the IB's framework into our current curriculum as well as learning and growing with your student!
Implementation of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme
The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally, and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical, and reflective thinkers (ibo.org).
IMPLEMENTATION PROGRESS
At Johnnie R. Carr Middle School, our students are expounding on the concept of being internationally and globally-minded. They are partaking in inquiry-based activities that allow them to think critically and reflectively. While the MYP is distinctively designed, both students and teachers are becoming acclimated to the rigor the programme offers.
SERVICE HOURS & 8TH-GRADE COMMUNITY PROJECT
We are currently working out the kinks so that our students could begin exploring acts of service. More information will be shared as this concept develops.
MISSED THE PARENT & COMMUNITY JOINT MEETING FOR JRC & PC?
At the joint meeting between Johnnie R. Carr and Park Crossing that was held October 26th at Park Crossing High School, we discussed our current timeline as well as the impact the MYP has on our students. A few items are listed below.
- IB students are empowered to participate in service projects within the community.
- IB students think analytically and demonstrate independent learning.
- IB students are internationally-minded and can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning.

IB Learner Profile
IB Learner Profile Trait of the Month: COMMUNICATOR
Students who are COMMUNICATORS are able to think and communicate in more than one language. They can express their ideas by speaking, drawing, and writing. They can also communicate using mathematical language and symbols.
How can parents help at home to develop students who are COMMUNICATORS?
Encourage your students to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters, using the phone, sending email messages, or Skyping.
When working on math homework, encourage your students to explain their answers to you orally, by drawing a picture, or by creating a digital presentation.
Work with your students to improve their listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.
Ask your students thought-provoking questions and encourage them to discuss their responses with you. For example:
What would you do if you were being bullied at school?
Is there anything you cannot buy with money?
Should you get an allowance? Why or why not?
Work with your student to improve his/her listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.
