Happenings and more...
February 3-7
Dear Parents,
Students have worked hard to show what they know this week and review what they may have struggled with on their unit assessment and their Reading mock assessment. I sent the unit assessment home for your review. We will continue to build skills in reading and answering higher level thinking. We are still working at absolute mastery and students need continued practice. They should use Google Classroom assignments, Education Galaxy, and IXL.com for further practice and skill building.
A Look at This Week:
Reading- This week we'll continue working on making inferences while reading or gaining information. We will use text evidence and our schema (background information/what we know). This week we will practice more independent practice where the students have the opportunity to show what we have been working on.
This is often very challenging to students because they are accustomed to getting black and white/straight forward information or answers. Please help them by asking them questions where the answers are NOT right there. “Why do you think that may have happened?” "How do you know?" "Why does the character or person act that way?" "Why did they do that?" We will work next week to build our inferencing skills by using text evidence and our schema (what we know).
Writing -
We have been working towards independent construction of an expository piece and this week we will revise and edit with a partner. Then we will publish this piece. Wednesday or Thursday we will begin our third expository piece with more emphasis on independent creation of the central idea, claims, and supporting details.
In grammar we will focus on prepositions and prepositional phrases. We will work on correct comma use beyond commas in a series and coordinating conjunctions too. Please encourage your child to use the assignments on Google Classroom Writing, Education Galaxy and IXL. Please ask your child what they are learning about and model it for you. Using apostrophes is one skill that many students are currently struggling with.
Vocabulary -We are taking a break to work on writing and grammar skills.
Social Studies- The Texas Revolution project will be completed this by Monday, February 10th end of school day. We will focus on knowing the important people of the Revolution this week and displaying their knowledge.
Love,
Mrs. Beiersdorfer

Valentine's Party
Our Valentine's party is February 13th. Students will be exchanging valentines and will need to bring in a decorated shoe box or bag (we will provide a bag if needed)! Please make sure there is a valentine for ALL students. Class lists will be sent home in next week's Wednesday folder.
Tomball Reads ONE Book
Tomball participates in a program called Texas Reads One Book. It is a state initiative encouraging students to read with their families.
This year's book is The Lemonade Crime by Jacqueline Davies. It is the follow up to The Lemonade War which was the book a few years ago. All students in 2nd-5th grade will be provided with a copy of the book. All teachers will also get a copy.
Tomball Reads One Book kicks off Monday, February 10th.
Upcoming Dates/Events:
*Each morning students are encouraged to join CFES for Call to Greatness at 8:30 am in the cafe!
This is such a positive and energizing way to set the stage for a great day as a campus and an opportunity to be aware of all the wonderful things happening and being celebrated at our school.
Please chat with your child about curiosity and building a desire to explore and answer questions that they have.
